جَفاني النُمَيرِيُّ فيمَن جَفا

جَفاني النُمَيرِيُّ فيمَن جَفا

وَما كانَ إِلّا كَمَن قَد سَرى

وَما كانَ إِلّا كَمَن قَد سَرى

Al-Numayri shunned me among those who shunned me.

The Numairi treated me harshly among those who were harsh

And he was only like one who had traveled by night.

Yet he was no different from one who had turned away

وَيَزعَمُ أَنّي لَهُ حافِظٌ

وَيَزعَمُ أَنّي لَهُ حافِظٌ

وَأَينَ خَليلٌ تَراهُ وَفى

وَأَينَ خَليلٌ تَراهُ وَفى

And he claims that I keep faith with him.

And claims that I am his protector

And where is a friend you have seen keep faith?

But where is the friend you see who was loyal?

وَما لِيَ مِنهُ سِوى الاِعتِذا

وَما لِيَ مِنهُ سِوى الاِعتِذا

رِ نَصيبٌ وَسائِرُهُ لِلعِدا

رِ نَصيبٌ وَسائِرُهُ لِلعِدا

And I have no share of him save apolo-

I have nothing from him except taking precautions

gy; all the rest of him is for the foes.

My share being good advice, and the rest being for enemies

وَما جَمَعَ اللَهُ حُبَّ اِمرِئٍ

وَما جَمَعَ اللَهُ حُبَّ اِمرِئٍ

وَحُبَّكَ أَعدائَهُ في حَشا

وَحُبَّكَ أَعدائَهُ في حَشا

And God has never joined love for a man

God does not combine the love of a person

And your love for his enemies in one heart.

And love for his enemies in one heart

بِأَيِّ سَلامٍ تُلاقي العَدُوَّ

بِأَيِّ سَلامٍ تُلاقي العَدُوَّ

وَسَيفُكَ في كَفِّهِ مُنتَضى

وَسَيفُكَ في كَفِّهِ مُنتَضى

With what greeting of peace do you meet the enemy,

With what peace does one meet the enemy

While your sword is drawn in his palm?

While your sword is drawn in his hand?
