أَلاAh! ماwhat لِقَلبٍwith a heart لاnot تُقَضّىare fulfilled حَوائِجُهits needs
وَوَجدٍand a longing أَطارَdrove away النَومَsleep بِاللَيلِat night لاعِجُهits burning anguish
Ah, what ails a heart whose needs are never met,
and a longing whose burning anguish drove sleep away at night,
وَداءٍand a sickness ثَوىsettled بَينَamong الجَوانِحِthe ribs وَالحَشاand the entrails
فَهَيهاتَso far away مِنfrom إِبرائِهِhealing it ماwhat يُوالِجُهpenetrates it
and a sickness lodged among the ribs and entrails?
So far from healing it is what penetrates it!
أَلاAh! إِنَّindeed دونَin the way of الصَبرِpatience ذِكرَthe memory مُفارِقٍof one who left
سَقىmay ... water اللَهُGod أَيّاماًdays تَجَلَّتcame into view هَوادِجُهhis camel-litters
Ah, the memory of one who left stands in the way of patience;
may God water the days when his camel-litters came into view.
غَزالٌa gazelle صَفاgrew clear ماءُthe water الشَبابِof youth بِخَدِّهِupon his cheek
فَضاقَتso grew tight عَلَيهِupon him سورُهُhis bracelets وَدَمالِجُهand his armlets
A gazelle, the water of youth clear upon his cheek,
so his bracelets and armlets grew tight upon him.
وَمُنتَصِرٍand one triumphant بِالغُصنِthrough the bough وَالحُسنِand beauty وَالنَقاand the sand dune
وَصُدغٍand a temple-lock أُديرَتwere curved فَوقَabove وَردٍroses صَوالِجُهits polo mallets
And one victorious through the bough, beauty, and the sand dune,
and a temple-lock whose polo mallets curved above roses.
تَحَكَّمَheld sway فيهِover him البَينُseparation وَالدَهرُand time يَنقَضيpasses away
فَلِلَّهِso to God belongs رَأيٌa judgment ماnot أَضَلَّتled astray مَناهِجُهits paths
Parting held sway over him, while time passed on.
So God's is a judgment whose paths do not lead astray.
وَآخِرُand the last حَظّيmy share مِنهُof him تَوديعُa farewell ساعَةٍof an hour
وَقَدand already مَزَجَhad mingled الإِصباحَdaybreak بِاللَيلِwith night مازِجُهits mingler
And my last share of him was an hour's farewell,
when its mingler had blended daybreak with night.
وَغَرَّدَand sang حاديthe camel-driver الرَكبِof the caravan وَاِنشَقَّتِand split apart العَصاthe staff
وَصاحَتand cried out بِأَخبارِwith tidings الفِراقِof separation شَواحِجُهits croakers
And the caravan's camel-driver sang, and the staff split apart,
and its croakers cried the tidings of separation.
فَكَمso many a دَمعَةٍtear تَعصيdefies الجُفونَthe eyelids غَزيرَةٍcopious
وَكَمand many a نَفَسٍbreath كَالجَمرِlike embers تَدمىbleed مَخارِجُهits outlets
Then how many a copious tear defies the eyelids,
and how many a breath like embers, whose passages bleed!
وَآخِرُand the last آثارِtraces المَحَبَّةِof love ماwhat تَرىyou see
طَلولٌruins وَرَبعٌand a campsite قَدalready تَغَيَّرَhas changed ناهِجُهits well-worn path
And the last traces of love are what you see:
ruins and a campsite whose well-worn path has changed.
أَضَرَّdid harm بِهِto it صَوبٌa downpour مِنَfrom المُزنِthe rainclouds وابِلٌtorrential

It was damaged by a torrential downpour from the rainclouds,
and by the scouring of winds that scatter its tracks.
أَلاAh! إِنَّindeed بَعدَafter النَأيِseparation قُرباًnearness وَأَوبَةًand a return
وَتَحتَand beneath غِطاءِthe veil الحُزنُof grief وَالهَمُّand care فارِجُهits dispeller
Ah, after separation come nearness and return,
and beneath the veil of grief and care lies their relief.
وَيَومِand many a day هَجيرٍof noonday heat لاnot يُجيرُshelters كِناسُهُits thicket-lair
مِنَfrom الحَرِّthe heat وَحشِيَّa wild one المَهاof the oryx وَهوَwhile it والِجُهentering it
And on many a day of noonday heat, whose thicket could not shelter
a wild oryx from the heat, even as it entered there,
يَظَلُّcontinues سَرابُthe mirage البيدِof the deserts فيهِin it كَأَنَّهُas though it were

the desert mirage lingering there as though it were
the edges of a cloak its weavers had shaken out,
نَضَيتُI bared لَهُto it وَجهيmy face وَعَزماًand a resolve مُؤُيَّداًfortified
أَراوِحُهُI give it respite حيناًfor a while وَحيناًand for a while أُوالِجُهI plunge into it
I bared to it my face and a fortified resolve,
at times giving it respite, at times plunging into it,
كَأَنّيas though I were عَلىon حَقباa white-flanked she-ass تَقَدُّمُgoing ahead of قارِحاًa full-grown male
كَمِثلِlike شِهابٍa shooting star طارَflew فيin الجَوِّthe sky مارِجُهits flame
as though I rode a white-flanked she-ass running ahead of a full-grown male,
like a shooting star whose flame flew through the sky.
يُسَوِّقُdrives onward أَسناهاthe finest of them لَواقِحَpregnant females قُربِهِhis nearness

فَأَلقَينَso they cast out حَملاًa burden أَعجَلَتهُhastened it نَواتِجُهits midwives
He drives their finest pregnant females, pressing close,
so they cast out a burden hurried forth by its midwives.
رَمَينَthey cast عَلىupon أَفخاذِهِنَّtheir thighs أَجِنَّةًfetuses

They cast fetuses upon their thighs,
as a vulture's nests let its young slip down.
وَيَرفَعنَand they raise نَقعاًdust كَالمُلاءِlike sheets مُهَلهَلاًloosely woven

And they raise dust like loosely woven sheets,
its billows surging over the back of the land.
وَيارُبَّand oh, many a مَطروقٍone visited by night قَمَرتُI outwitted غَيورَهُhis jealous guardian
وَطاوَعتُand I yielded to فيهِfor him حُبَّa love نَفسٍof the soul أُعالِجُهI wrestle with it
And many a beloved I visited by night, outwitting his jealous guardian,
and yielded to the soul's love for him, which I wrestled with,
فَريدَينِtwo alone لاnot نُلقىwe are encountered بِعِلمٍwith anyone's knowledge كَأَنَّناas though we were

alone together, unseen by anyone, as though we were
two confidants in a plot whose designs lay hidden,
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَوَلّىturned away النَجمُthe star وَاِنخَرَقَand was rent الدُجىthe darkness
كَأَنَّas though ضِياءَthe light الفَجرِof dawn بِالأُفقِon the horizon باعِجُهtearing it open
until the star withdrew and the darkness was rent,
as though dawn's light on the horizon were ripping it open.
وَأُبتُand I returned وَبيand within me مِنof وِدِّهاher love مُضمَراتُهُits hidden feelings
وَداخِلُهُand its inside سِرٌّa secret وَلِلناسِand for people خارِجُهits outside
And I returned with the secrets of her love within me,
its inner part a secret, its outward part for others.
وَياand oh رُبَّmany a يَومٍday قَدalready سَبَقتُI outstripped صَباحَهits morning
بِمَوكِبِwith a cavalcade فِتيانٍof young men تَسيلُflow هَمالِجُهits ambling mounts
And many a day's dawn I had outstripped,
with a cavalcade of youths, its ambling mounts flowing along.
وَإِبريقُand a ewer شَربٍof drinkers قَدalready أَجَبتُI answered دُعاتَهُits callers
كَأَنَّas though مُديرَthe server الراحِof wine فيin الكَأسِthe cup دارِجُهwalking in it
And many a drinkers' ewer whose callers I answered,
as though the wine-server were walking inside the cup.
وَيَنقَضُّand swoops بِالأَرواحِwith souls روحُthe spirit مُدامَةٍof wine
يَكونُare بِأَفواهِat the mouths النَدامىof drinking companions مَعارِجُهits paths of ascent
And the spirit of wine sweeps souls away;
its paths of ascent lie in the mouths of drinking companions.
وَقَدand indeed عِشتُI have lived حَتّىuntil ماnot لَدىbefore وَجهِthe face مُنيَةٍof a wish

And I have lived until no longer, at the prospect of a wish,
does my heart's striving return to it.
