واطال فيما لا يجوز واقصرا
Why did the slanderer multiply his words and fabricate lies,
I did not excessively slander and lie,
And dwell at length on what is forbidden, then cut it short?
Nor did I prolong what is unlawful or shorten what's right.

And spread indecency among the chaste.

Poor soul, may God forgive him his sin,
For he has indeed uttered a fabricated tale.
For he has uttered fabricated talk.

Oh, the schemes he has hatched, the havoc he has wreaked!

Among whom no mature, wise man exists.

Like beasts of prey—may your Lord spare you their evil!
Like beasts whose evil you are spared by your Lord
If they display goodness, evil is concealed.
If outwardly they show goodness, while inwardly nursing evil.

We both had an assembly there,
I treated them fairly in it and did not fall short.
Where I was fair to them, and did not fall short.

I gave them what they had never given,
And they were satisfied and said, 'You ought to be thanked.'
They were content, saying I should be thanked.

From them in writing I took testimony,
And left them content and glad.
And left them happily, cheerfully.

I presented it before the vizier Muhammad;
I presented it to the minister Muhammad,
Then he read it, repeated what he had read, and pondered.
Who read it and pondered what he read.

His right—and brought out a written statement contradicting that:
And brought out a document contrary to that.

And the truth, take it from the witnesses last.

Lied; whoever bears false witness is punished.
Had lied. Who testifies falsely deserves punishment.

Is this the character of men of piety?
Is this the trait of honorable, high-minded men?
Where is good sense? Where is shame before mankind?
Where is the care, where is the shame from disgrace?

So I kept silent about them and cast aside their talk,
So I was silent about them and shunned their talk,
Rejecting it—and such talk rightly deserves rejection.
Estranged - and it's right for the likes of them to be shunned.

Against an unsuspecting man whom they malign without his knowing.
To take an unwary man by surprise, who knows naught.

Had they complained less, it would have had an effect on him;
If they lessen their complaints, he might speak up,
For doubt arises in a man when complaints grow frequent.
For suspicion grows in a youth if they increase.

And he protected all creation, governing and administering.
And protected the lands, governing and planning.
