    Two men—I need not name them.

    Each one's name becomes clear when I describe them.

    They have compiled something and said that it

    is among the things people say—and your Lord knows it.

    They ascribed its composition to the imams' books,

    and the books swear they are nothing but its mother.

    والمرء يعذر إن يخنه فهمه

    And they distort the words, though not deliberately;

    a man is excused if his understanding betrays him.

    And whenever someone appears before either of them,

    he hides the compilation beneath him and clasps it.

    Like a cat that shits, then denies its smell,

    so it keeps burying what it has shat and sniffing it.
