Thus let what causes concern be tackled when it rises high.

For nothing mends a matter like judgment when it falls into disorder.

One whom another had set over the kingdom took charge of it,

And the management of an unfit man shook it.

They urged one another to appoint him, so they too might be appointed,

Yet they did neither binding nor unbinding well.

Nor did they treat their equals gently; rather, they grew haughty,

With the haughtiness of royalty, and they despised everyone.

Their conduct was not tolerated, and a faction said:

‘Do you obey, though no superiority of theirs over us is known?’

So they rose against them in a revolt in which they went too far,

And through it, whoever among them strayed departed from right guidance.

They crossed bounds not to be approached, and ventured

Upon a deed whose like we had never heard of.

Had they been granted sound judgment and come to you at first,

And not brought about that grave affair or the killing,

Satan would not have been given power over them to mislead them,

Nor would the Merciful have drained away their judgment altogether.

But they came after violating sacred prohibitions,

And a grave affair whose like had never occurred before.

So you turned a blind eye to them, while the Guardian was angry,

And they were inspired only to error and ignorance.

You graciously forgave them those sins,

And gave them further bounty beyond what they had received.

Yet—God was not pleased with them—nothing grew in them

Through your kindness but oppression, treachery, and deceit.

A pact they had built deceived them; they had made fast

Its bonds, and but for your sound judgment it would not have unraveled.

With sound judgment you drew the discerning among them to yourself,

And brought close those among them in whom you found reason.

Your kindness was not cut off from any of them,

Nor did your clouds withhold justice from them.

Satan had made their deeds seem fair to them,

And made the transgressor among them think himself the highest.

He incited them until the rebel was bewildered—

The one who had gone too far—at being delivered to his bereaved mother.

    So they resolved on a thing no stratagem could attain;

How far is the sky from one who stretches out a paralyzed hand!

And you showed them heedlessness beneath vigilance,

You gave them leeway in it and did not hasten to tighten the rope.

And you said: ‘They are in my hand, wherever they turn.’

Where can one who flees escape from the night?

The strong do not fear their foes escaping; rather,

A man in command spends the night watching for his opportunity.

You were forbearing; and when their skins could no longer contain them,

And forbearance nearly showed you their words turned to deeds,

You seized them with the mighty one's grasp, with power,

And tore them apart in slaughter and scattered their company.

What had never entered their reckoning befell them,

Nor the reckoning of any man who claimed reason.

We had seen it as a sedition grown grievous,

Whose deep black darkness would not easily clear.

We said: ‘The sound course is to calm their affair,

And better that you drink for days from murky water.’

But you held a view of them different from ours,

And took them unawares with the sword, accepting no reproach.

No two sheep clashed horns over them, nor did

A camel bellow, nor one man say to another, ‘Wait!’

Places we had never thought would be emptied.

Who wishes to cut his skin into a sandal for you,

And one who thinks little of killing his son,

If he saw that son's sincere loyalty to you diminish.

Such men deserve to be granted greater honor,

And raised in rank and honored with hospitality.

Happy this kingdom, that you are its lord!

Indeed you adorned it with generosity; indeed you adorned it with justice.

And it is assured of manifest victory, and that

With Yahya ibn Ismail it is safe from being forsaken.

There is no true possession save that through which a man earns

Praise and remembrance that neither die nor fade.

Yours is the highest word, and your Lord assigns

The lowest word to all whom you have opposed.
