قالتْ سُليمى ابشر فموعدنا الغدُ
فظللتَso you remained منfrom فرحيmy joy أقومُI rise وأقعدُand I sit
فظللتَ من فرحي أقومُ وأقعدُ
Sulayma said, 'Rejoice: our rendezvous is tomorrow.'
Sulaima said, rejoice, for tomorrow is our appointment
So, in my joy, I kept rising and sitting down.
So I was overjoyed, standing up and sitting down

Until I saw tomorrow, though its place was near,
Until I saw the next day arrive, and its place draw near
as farther away than anything, so intense was my longing.
Yet I saw nothing of it, so intense was my yearning

A night has come between tomorrow and me,
A night came between tomorrow and me
wearing out time while its own lifespan is renewed.
Wearing out time while its life is made new

Had dawn visited me that night, it would have erased the darkness
If the brilliant morning visited me in it
in haste, as a hand erases an error in writing.
Quickly erasing the writing of hands, like hands do

The night of separation lingers, while nights of meeting
The night of pining remains, and the nights of meeting
pass like a glance cut short by someone with sore eyes.
Pass in a blink, like the echo of a song by a singer

I visited her by night; when she unveiled her face,
I visited her at night, but when dawn broke
I saw a sun whose light rose ever higher.
I saw a sun whose light ascended

So I decided, when dusk whitened around me
for fear of talebearers, while others' night remained black.
To fear the slanderers, and a night not my own, I darkened

I bit my hand, regretting my departure,
And I bit my hand in regret at my exit
while the night still lingered and the stars stood still.
While the night remains, and the stars are studded

She found my conduct strange and said, 'What ails him?
So she questioned my matter and said, "What is with him?
Before a greeting, he was already rushing off with all his might!'
Before greetings, he came changed and struggling?"

She unveiled herself to me as a sun, and I imagined that
You made the sun rise for me, then abandoned that
through her, tomorrow had already conquered the night.
From it, tomorrow had taken over the night

I had not thought that the radiance of her face
I didn't expect that the rising of her face
would, like the sun, carry darkness away and banish it.
Like the sun, would take away the darkness and banish it

She sent a reproach—do not ask what happened:
She sent blaming, don't ask about what happened
my ways out grew narrow, and so did the way in.
My resources were straitened with me, and the spring was tightened

So I explained what her radiance had done to me.
I explained what her lights had done to me
She pardoned me and said, 'That argument cannot be denied.'
So she excused, and said, "An undeniable argument"

And tomorrow, the envious will die, should we meet
