فيماin what ترىyou see منof صروفthe vicissitudes of الدهرtime والغيرand reversals
So surrender the matter, and give patience its due
Submit to destiny, accept what is ordained,
In what you see of time's vicissitudes and reversals.
In the turns of fate and people's disdain.

For a person's stratagem is futile against fate,
Man's schemes against destiny are in vain,
So drink this world's clear draught amid its murk.
So drink life's bitterness and its joy maintain.

And say to your mind, while sorrows trouble it:
Tell your opinion and troubled thoughts,
Leave matters to heaven, to unfold as decreed.
"Let it be, whatever is divinely wrought."

For sometimes a person deems his deliverance far off
Hope may abandon man in darkest spot,
From a calamity's knot that unravels soon afterward.
When a happening unfolds and stress is not.

God has a subtle kindness toward His servant; if you perceived it,
God's kindness to His servant, if you comprehend,
You would not [unclear wording] throughout the night in sleeplessness.
Would spare you sleepless nights that never end.

Hardship and ease are paired; both have descended.
Hardship and ease both descend,
God does not bring hardship and ease together.
God combines not perpetual hardship without ease.

Think well of your Lord amid calamities; do not
Think the best of your Lord in times of strife,
Let calamity's sharp fang and claw frighten you.
Let not the severity of events cause you grief.

How many a dreadful onslaught of time's vicissitudes—
Many a shocking turn of fate swiftly comes to life,
He dispelled its dust cloud in the blink of an eye.
Its frightfulness fades in time, and brings relief.

So seek refuge with God if a calamity befalls you,
So seek refuge in God when trouble looms,
For you know what lies in a prayer before dawn.
You know the power of invoking Him in glooms.
