My lot from you on the day of separation is distance;

My share of you is remoteness after remoteness

and on the day of nearness, aversion and rejection.

And nearness is aversion and estrangement

ونحوك كل يوم لي رسول

ونحوك كل يوم لي رسول

له في كل يوم منك رد

له في كل يوم منك رد

And every day I have a messenger bound for you;

And towards you every day I have a messenger

each day he meets with a rebuff from you.

Who brings me from you each day a rejection

وقلبي عنك في الحالين راض

وقلبي عنك في الحالين راض

لعلمي أن مالي منك بد

لعلمي أن مالي منك بد

Yet my heart is content with you in both states,

And my heart is content with you in both states

for I know I cannot do without you.

For my knowledge that I have no alternative to you

ولا لي مثل غيري حين أخفا

ولا لي مثل غيري حين أخفا

فؤاد ينتهي عمن يود

فؤاد ينتهي عمن يود

Nor, when shunned, have I, as others do,

And none like me when I conceal

a heart that turns away from the one it loves.

A heart that ends up loving whom it loves

على رأسي وعيني ظلم هند

على رأسي وعيني ظلم هند

رضيت بكلما فعلته هند

رضيت بكلما فعلته هند

I gladly bear Hind's injustice upon my head and eye.

On my head and eyes the darkness of India

I am content with whatever Hind has done.

I was content with all that you did O India

فقل للعاذلين صه فبينى

فقل للعاذلين صه فبينى

وبين سماع ما تملون سد

وبين سماع ما تملون سد

So tell the reproachers, “Hush!” For between me

So say to those who blame me "Hush!" For between me

and hearing what you dictate stands a barrier.

And hearing what you dictate is a barrier

خذي يا هند بي في الحب رفقاً

خذي يا هند بي في الحب رفقاً

فما صبري بطول جفاك ند

فما صبري بطول جفاك ند

Be gentle with me in love, O Hind,

Take it easy on me in love O India

for my patience is no match for your prolonged coldness.

For my patience for your long estrangement has no continuity

ولا لي قوة تنهي اشتياقي

ولا لي قوة تنهي اشتياقي

ولا قلبي على الأهواء جلد

ولا قلبي على الأهواء جلد

Nor have I strength to end my longing,

Nor do I have the power to end my longing

nor is my heart strong enough to endure passions.

Nor is my heart strong against passions

عسى يا هند تعطفك الليالي

عسى يا هند تعطفك الليالي

ويصدق من وعود الوصل وعد

ويصدق من وعود الوصل وعد

Perhaps, O Hind, the nights will soften you,

May you be softened by the nights O India

and one of the promises of union will come true,

And a promise of union be fulfilled

ويرتع في رياض الحسن طرفي

ويرتع في رياض الحسن طرفي

ويطفي من غليل القلب وقد

ويطفي من غليل القلب وقد

and my gaze will graze in beauty's meadows,

And may my eyes enjoy the meadows of beauty

and the blaze of the heart's longing will be quenched.

And the anguish of my heart be extinguished

إِلى كم هكذا هجر وصد

إِلى كم هكذا هجر وصد

أما للصد والهجران حد

أما للصد والهجران حد

How long must this desertion and rejection last?

How long will this estrangement and rejection continue

Is there no limit to rejection and estrangement?

Is there no end to estrangement and separation?

إذا ما قلت قد أشجاك نوحي

إذا ما قلت قد أشجاك نوحي

ولنت قسا فؤادك فهو صلد

ولنت قسا فؤادك فهو صلد

Whenever I say, “My lament has grieved you,

If I said "Your abandoning me has saddened me"

and you have softened,” your heart hardens, for it is rock-hard.

And your heart became harsh, it is unfeeling

وحفظ العهد من كرم السجايا

وحفظ العهد من كرم السجايا

فما لك لا يدوم لديك عهد

فما لك لا يدوم لديك عهد

And keeping a pledge is a mark of noble character;

And keeping a promise is of the nobility of natures

so why does no pledge endure with you?

So why does a commitment not last with you?

فو أسفا على زمن تقضا

فو أسفا على زمن تقضا

وليلات تولت لا ترد

وليلات تولت لا ترد

Alas for a time gone by,

What a pity for a time that has passed

and nights that have passed, never to return.

And nights that will not return

لعل الله يجمع بين هند

لعل الله يجمع بين هند

وبيني في رضاه كما أود

وبيني في رضاه كما أود

May God bring Hind

May Allah bring together India and me

and me together with His approval, as I desire.

In His satisfaction as I wish
