Love's witnesses within me reproach me:

    sleeplessness, streaming tears, and wasting.

And a body sickness has effaced—without its shirt,

it would appear a phantom, like a shadow about to vanish.

    وكل عزيز للغرام ذليل

    Love clothed me in abasement after proud self-assertion;

and every mighty one is humbled before passion.

I once had a heart averse to love,

and to everything that bore a sign of it.

Then, from beside the curtain, it caught a glimpse

of a sun whose radiance sets within hearts.

From her, love charges with polished blades,

    unsheathed by a soft-voiced, kohl-eyed gazelle.

    تقومه العذال وهو يميل

    Through her it went away drunk on the wine of love;

the reproachers set it upright as it swayed.

None has tasted life's savor but a love-stricken soul,

slain by the gleaming sword-edges of those gazelles.

Our beloved ones, separation has lasted long; can we

    reach reunion after this parting?

You went far away; none paid friendship its due

save my eye's tears—and the friend lies slain.

Thus my cheek, praise be to God, is fertile with tears,

but the dwelling-place of patient endurance is barren.

Who, then, can find me a companion with longing like mine?

I would speak in sorrow once, and he would answer.

he gives me some in turn, till we quench our burning thirst.

My ribs yearn for the land of al-Husayb,

as a camel calf yearns in the days of weaning.

And if the south wind breathes, I intercept it,

asking after you while tears flow.

What harm if you entrusted it with a message

to me? Is there a messenger like the breeze?

The abode has indeed grown distant; if Ahmad wished,

a swift ride and departure tomorrow would bring it near.

    ودانت حزون جمة وسهول

    For he has added kingdom to kingdom and struck with might;

many rugged uplands and plains have submitted.

He led lean steeds against the commanders, their armored riders—

young men and elders—racing upon them.

With those steeds he erased them as ink is erased, till they became

a tale, and a lengthy account of that tale.

He secured the road across Mawr and drove it,

waves and all, until it yielded, humbled.

No goal of eminence or glory remained

for him to range and roam in pursuit of its attainment.

Nor is anyone left behind him whom the sword-edges desire,

nor anyone whose lifeblood those blades might spill.

None are there but Ghafiq and his slaves,

and Sahb—or else Arbad and Za'ul.

And those whom swords will not accept as food:

no scrawny prey is offered to your swords.

    وإن تطرح فالأمر فيه جميل

    Sparrows: if you seize them, they play dead;

and if you let them go, there is grace in that.

Sufficient for them is a terror that has shattered

hearts and almost made minds depart.

Eminence leads you, by God, whenever

you reach a place to which a path leads.

Your gallantry and might delight her,

so she swears that not all men are stallions.

Self-admiration and pride seize her, so she scorns

all but you, and prolongs the praise she grants you.

Yours is the unbowed, radiant brow, and an ambition whose

reach towers above the roof of heaven.

The dust you walk upon in your sandals exults,

and trails the skirts of eminence over itself.

May you never cease ascending glory's summit, holding fast

to praise, alone, with no peer beside you.
