In God—glory be to Him—is recompense for those who have passed away.

So let not excessive grief and sorrow take their toll on you.

Nor let the enormity of any matter terrify you.

For what deep darkness does not disperse?

    Time's course with humankind has no fixed end;

For if they run with it, at some limit they must stop.

Most worthy of patient endurance is a calamity

That cannot be escaped, and a turn of fate that will not turn aside.

And whatever one hopes to benefit from—

A discerning man's spending his life on it is waste.

If grief could restore anything lost,

Through it we would exact redress from time's vicissitudes.

But it is death—a sickness with no cure,

And a pursuer that overtakes whoever turns away from it.

    وننكر الأمر حيناً ثم نعترفُ

    Death terrifies us greatly at its onslaught;

And we deny the event awhile, then acknowledge it.

Like a sheep that startled a flock, which returned to her

In fear; and the ungrazed meadow distracted it from her.

And time has always made us weep and laugh,

Through its turns; in this way our forebears passed on.

    And the paths of God's choice are not hidden;

For a man does not know where he will pluck the fruit.

And sometimes an unwelcome turn of events befalling him

Stands, for a man, as a veil over what he loves.

    فقد أقاموا على الأَحزان واعتكفوا

    Regain your solace, so that all the people may be consoled;

For they have settled into sorrow and secluded themselves.

So you see none but one whose heart burns with anguish,

And one whose eye sheds tears from its pupil.

No wonder they are distraught at the horror of a calamity

That nearly made their backbones snap.

And it better befits you to act wisely and return to

What loftiness, glory, and honor demand.

Indeed, we are bound for God; the calamity is a night of deep darkness,

But by your face its darkness is dispelled.

We are the ransom; whenever calamities aim

An arrow, our souls stand before you as the target.

And we are two groups: some of us await

Being offered as ransom; others have already gone before.

    هذا يجيء وهذا عنك منصرفُ

    When a company passes away, you raise up others;

This one comes, and that one departs from you.

And you are a pole around which the celestial spheres revolve,

And the moon of your good fortune is full, never eclipsed.

Who will help Time erase its sin?

For it comes forward, confessing its guilt.

It followed its nature in the one with whom it ransomed you,

As of old—yet pearls and shells are not equal.

So its brightness turned black, and its eye turned white,

And it wished that destruction had carried it off.

O king, who encompasses his successors

In virtues that brand whoever describes them as mistaken.

    O you—when I say, 'O one without an equal,'

Opinions do not differ as to my truthfulness.

Do not despair, for the one you parted from will join her

In the holy presence, in the shade of divine favor,

In the Garden of Eternity, in the Abode of Lasting Rest—already

Chambers have become his, with chambers above them.

Prayer is raised to God for her from around the tomb,

Each day, and the scriptures are recited beside her.

So train to patience a soul whose wood admits

No softness or splintering in calamity, however it assails.

    فليس عندهما غوثٌ ولا نجفُ

    And rein in sorrow and grief, and forget them both;

For with them there is neither help nor high ground for refuge.

So if you recall days gone by, say:

In God—glory be to Him—is recompense for those who have passed away.
