How long will you persist in delusion and heedlessness?

And how long this sleep, with no awakening?

A lifetime has been wasted, a single hour of which you would buy

for all that fills heaven and earth—what a waste!

O pearl cast among the refuse heaps,

and jewel sold for the paltriest price!

Are you an enemy, or a friend to your own soul?

For you assail it with every calamity.

Had your enemies done to your soul some of what

you have done, some compassion for it would have touched them.

You have indeed sold it cheaply—my burning grief for you!

And it did not deserve this treatment from you.

creation, if you are the son of a noble mother.

Do not exult in it over an hour's joy

that returns upon you with long-lasting sorrows.

For your life in it—a thousand years, then its end—

is like your life in it for part of a day and a night.
