seeking aid; so answer the call of one seeking redress.

By God, why would you need him, when he is the needy one?

He came to you, a worthy man's plight declaring:

“I have come defeated”; so you told him, “Seek redress.

So, while good fortunes visit kings

now and then, your good fortune has remained unbroken.

So thank your God, and await from His bounty

what no gratitude can repay, though thanks are given.

shattered heads and a heart split apart.

so praise your God—every difficult thing you seek.

to gain strength through it against whoever holds firm.

    A wart of corruption has offered you its head;

so cut it off, for it is most harmful if it grows.

For if the Arabs find ease, they support one another,

and one among them then prevails with another's aid.

Do not be content to leave them to another, for

not every rebuke makes a rebel desist.

    هذا خلاف عن قلوب تستعر

    For this defiance of theirs is defiance of their Creator;

this is defiance born of blazing hearts.

Do not underestimate this revolt; prudence is shown if

you begin by quenching it and do not take it lightly.

And strike, with a sword in the Creator's hand, the necks

of those men, and make them swallow cups of bitter aloes.

Then, when they come to their senses and you have won back their minds,
