وأشرح حالي باختصار فأطنبُ
Do you know, or shall I speak and bring delight?
Do you have knowledge or shall I speak and enchant
And briefly explain my state, then speak at length?
And explain my state concisely yet verbosely?

لماwould not قامsuffice ليfor me طرسٌa sheet of parchment ولاnor استطعتI could اكتبُI write
لما قام لي طرسٌ ولا استطعت اكتبُ
Were I to attempt to cover every detail of it,
Had I tried to elaborate every detail
No parchment would suffice me, nor could I set it down.
No ground would stand for me, nor could I write.

لقيت فتىً لو كان للسحبِ كفه
لماwould not طلعتrise شمسٌa sun ولاnor لاحappear كوكبُa star
لما طلعت شمسٌ ولا لاح كوكبُ
I met a young man: if the clouds had his hand,
I met a youth, if his palm held the clouds
No sun would rise, nor any star appear.
No sun would rise, no stars shine.

فأعربُ حتى قلتُ ما هو معربٌ
وأعجبand I marvel حتىuntil قلَّdwindled منيfrom me التعجبُwonder
وأعجب حتى قلَّ مني التعجبُ
So I described him until I said he remained undescribed;
So I expressed until I said the inexpressible
And I marveled until my wonder itself dwindled.
And admired until admiration diminished in me.

I could not fathom all the wonders I encountered;
I did not know what I encountered of every admirer,
And if I said I knew, by God, I would be lying.
And if I claimed to know, I would be, by God, lying.

So say whatever you wish of what you love—and beyond it;
So say what you wish of what you love, and beyond it
And its multiples—multiply them by a thousand of their like,
Its multiples in the like of it multiply by a thousand.

Up to a thousand thousand, times thousands upon thousands,
To a thousand, to thousands in thousands repeated
And the reckoned sum is multiplied by what cannot be reckoned.
And reckoned, though uncountable, I met.

لقيتُ ولا والله للعشر يقربُ
However far what I have mentioned reaches, it is a tenth of what
So however far what I described reached
I received—yet no, by God, it does not approach a tenth;
It was not, by God, a tenth of what I met.

Nor a tenth of a tenth of that tenth—multiply it downward,
Nor a tenth of a tenth, so compare descending
By its like, many times what it expresses.
With its likes, multiples of what can be expressed.

See that much bestowed on me every day.
Each day gifts me such.

And its multiples—nay, double the multiples of its double—
Its multiples, nay, double the multiples of its double
Are thousands, to which it is ascribed whenever counted.
Thousands added, each time counted, slip away.
ولاand no ذنبَfault إِنif قصرتُI fell short فيماin what شرحتهI explained it

فليسfor is not الذيthe one who يأتيcomes علىto الجهدthe utmost effort مذنبُat fault

And no fault is mine if I have fallen short in what I explained,
No blame, if I fell short in what I explained
For one who does his utmost is not to blame.
For the tireless is not blamed for his exertion.

O Abu Bakr, hear what delights you, and wait
Abu Bakr, hear what pleases you, and wait
For what you hope for and seek from my deeds.
For what you hope from me and seek.

For I am one who does not forget a friend's due,
I do not forget a friend's due,
And I—or toward whoever shows loyalty and reproaches [text unclear].
And I am loyal to those who befriend and are true.

Then what excuse have I if I do not grant you your wishes,
What argument have I, if I do not convey to you your desire,
So you wake in wedding joy, while your enemies lament?
And you wake to a wedding, while I make you mourn?

Why not, beyond what I have described,
And these hands of his give freely and bring gain.
His hands generosity and bounty disbursed?

O Abu Bakr, through the minister I shall surely prevail,
Abu Bakr, I have prevailed over the minister,
And you, my friend, are on my side and will not be defeated.
And you, my friend, have prevailed over me.

وخيبة مسعاه الذي فيه أطنبوا
So tell them: 'How feeble is their leader's plot,
So tell them: "How feeble is your leader's cunning,
And how futile his pursuit, on which they dwelt at length!'
And failed his effort which you so lauded."

Indeed they have united—if only they had averted a scatterer;
They gathered, else dispersed, avoiding each other,
And they would have inspired fear, if one like me knew fear.
And frightened, had I been easily frightened.

Tell them: "Die choking, I see for you
Find that sweeter for you than what you face.'
Sweeter than what you have encountered."

And glad tidings to you: you have attained what you hoped for;
Good tidings, you have attained what you hoped from me,
So take what you hope for from me—and more besides.
Yours, what you wished of me, and more.
