As Yahya once lived through Isma'il,

you see him living through Yahya today within his grave.

Indeed, one who revives glory for a dead father

has greater merit than one who revives his living son's glory.

When sons revive their father's memory,

you are the one who revived his glory and eminence,

and renewed what follows of his abundant ancestral honors,

just as he renewed it while still in this world.

He is not among the dead: among his good deeds

is Yahya, his tribute, as when he was among the living.

    Thus should a son strive on his father's behalf;

but far from it—not every man knows how to strive well.

Yahya has given me so much that I no longer see

anything worth counting apart from his generosity.

    He gave until I nearly grew weary of receiving it;

he lavishes it on me, giving without growing weary.

My eye has seen no one like Yahya, and I

surely proclaim this verdict among the people of [unclear].

His father was such in generosity, among all I have known,

that rain blushed whenever it vied with his bounty.

Though he is but a drop in the sea of your generosity,

I have not heedlessly forgotten his kindness.

By God, I never forget a man who, in his lifetime,

met my needs, and on dying left me Yahya.

Indeed, in al-Zahir the king, the world has seen

virtues that thoroughly roast his envier's heart.

You humbled your enemies by what you do,

and increased their rage, so they died while still alive.

    وكلهم غرسٌ وأنت له السُّقيا

    All humankind needs you and has its wants;

all are plantings, and you are their watering.

Your good fortune is an army that has spared your troops battle with the foe,

and undertaken the thrusting, striking, and shooting for them.

    You are strength and protection to all the troops;

so woe to those who earn banishment from your door.

Each day a calamity will fall upon them,

and each day you will hear their death announced [reading uncertain].

    وإلا أتتهم كل داهيةٍ دهيا

    They die of hunger if they stay their hands;

otherwise every dreadful calamity assails them.

Its Bedouins shatter them with their swords

if they seize anything from anyone unjustly.

Especially once their expulsion is known,

they find neither shelter to shade them nor shade.

There is none there but one who slits their throats,

acting as your hands against them and wringing them hard.

Your subjects' lives are protected by blades,

and you destroy them if you do not choose exile for them.

    Your good fortune has kept the blades within their sheaths;

it neither flagged in what it undertook nor grew weary.

Your supreme majesty and your pardon have allowed

your bright swords neither satiety nor slaking among the foes.

When the enemies are guided, the swords cry within their sheaths:

My God, replace their guidance with error!

Your majesty restrains the enemy, and your pardon,

when they desist, answers with forgiveness and care.

Thus its bidding and forbidding take effect upon the foes,

while your bright swords lament that bidding and forbidding.

The judgment of sharp swords is unjust: if you obeyed it,

they would set streams of their blood running.

A man who opposes you meets, in his own person,

deadly perils from which there is no escape or end.

Welcome such an arrival! Every dwelling

holds, because of it, a wedding whose joy has filled the world.

You arrived; men found that, among what was in their keeping,

overwhelmed by their wonder at you, they had lost things.

Leave them to wander dazed; there is nothing strange in this,

even if they had seen Yahya only in a dream.

Do you not see them humbled, with eyes

fixed, with no blinking or turning away?

Even if a man were struck with a sword, he would not notice,

because of the joy he finds in this meeting.

May you ever remain beloved of God and humankind,

for their love comes from their Creator's love, by inspiration.
