وما حجر إسماعيل لولا محمدٌ

وما حجر إسماعيل لولا محمدٌ

تداركه حجراً معدا لذي حجرِ

And Ismail's enclosure, but for Muhammad,

Were it not for Muhammad, the stone of Ishmael

who came to its aid, would not be a refuge prepared for a man of understanding.

Would not have been a stone prepared for one with a stone

ولا غرو أن احياه والعرقُ واحدِ

ولا غرو أن احياه والعرقُ واحدِ

ألست ترى كلا يقال له المقري

ألست ترى كلا يقال له المقري

No wonder he revived it—their stock is one.

And no wonder he revived it, for their lineage is one

Do you not see that each is called al-Muqri?

Do you not see both are called Al-Muqri?

خلفت رسول الله أنت محمدُ

خلفت رسول الله أنت محمدُ

واَنبت ابنه وابن ابنه طيب الذكر

واَنبت ابنه وابن ابنه طيب الذكر

You succeeded God's Messenger—you, Muhammad;

You succeeded the Messenger of Allah, you Muhammad

and his son and his grandson made fragrant remembrance bloom.

And sprouted his son and grandson of good repute

بحورُ علوم أغرق البحر مدها

بحورُ علوم أغرق البحر مدها

فكفكفته بالجزر خوفا على البرِ

فكفكفته بالجزر خوفا على البرِ

Seas of learning, whose rising tide drowned the sea;

Oceans of knowledge which drowned the sea with their tide

so you restrained it with ebbing, fearing for the land.

So you dammed it back with islands, for fear of the land

فمن أجل هذا البر بالبر خيرهم

فمن أجل هذا البر بالبر خيرهم

محمد وهو البحر يعرف بالجزرِ

محمد وهو البحر يعرف بالجزرِ

So, for this kindness toward the land, the best of them

Thus for the sake of this land with islands, the best of them

is Muhammad—and he is the sea known by its ebb.
