1. يا من أدار بحسنه المعبود

    صهباء وصل فى كؤوس صدود

    O you who, through your worshipped beauty, passed round

    the tawny wine of union in cups of rejection.

  2. ملأت محاسنك الوجود محاسنا

    لم يبق قلب فيك غير عميد

    Your charms have filled existence with charms;

    no heart remains but is stricken with love for you.

  3. يا من دعانى قبل أوجد حسنه

    فقضى جمال وجوده بوجودى

    O you whose beauty summoned me before I came into being,

    so the beauty of your being decreed my being.

  4. إني بحسنك قد حييت وإنني

    سأموت من شوق عليك شديد

    Through your beauty I have indeed come alive, and I

    shall die of intense longing for you.

  5. وإذا رضيت بان أموت هوى فقد

    أحييتنى يا مبدئى ومعيدى

    And if you are pleased that I die of love, then you have

    given me life, O my originator and my restorer.

  6. أضحى جمالك مفرطا وصبابتى

    لورودها فمتى يكون ورودي

    Your beauty has grown beyond measure, and my yearning

    is to reach its waters—when shall I arrive?

  7. ولقد رأيت مياهها لكنها

    رؤيا صدٍ عن ذوقها مصدود

    And I have indeed seen its waters, but it was

    the dream of a thirsty one barred from tasting them.

  8. أمعذبي بدلاله ومنعمي

    بجماله وبهائه المشهود

    O you who torment me with your coyness and delight me

    with your beauty and your manifest splendor,

  9. إن كنت فى يوم العذاب معاتبى

    فمتى أفوز بيومه الموعود

    if you reproach me on the day of torment,

    then when shall I attain its promised day?

  10. لى من جمالك حسن وعد يرتجى

    ومن الدلال علي حسن وعيد

    From your beauty I have a lovely promise to hope for;

    and from your coyness, a lovely threat against me.

  11. خطوات ذكرك لا تفارق خاطري

    وجمال حسنك لم يزل مشهودى

    The footsteps of your remembrance never leave my mind;

    and the beauty of your loveliness is ever what I behold.

  12. واذا نطقت فأنت مقصودى وان

    أصمت فحين فناي في مقصودى

    And when I speak, you are the one I seek; and if

    I fall silent, it is when I am annihilated in the one I seek.

  13. لولاك لم ينض المساق مطيتى

    ولما أنست بموحشات البيد

    Were it not for you, the journey would not have worn out my mount,

    nor would I have felt at home in the deserts' lonely places,

  14. ولما حبست على معالم رامة

    نضوي أسائل صامت الجلمود

    nor, at Rāma's landmarks, would I have halted

    my worn-out mount, questioning the silent boulder.

  15. ولعى بغزلان الصريم قضى به

    ولهى عليك وموقفى بزرود

    My passion for the gazelles of the sandy tract was decreed by

    my lovesick yearning for you and my halt at Zarūd.

  16. فى كل وقت لى هوى متجدد

    لغريب حسن لاح فيك جديد

    At every moment I have a love renewed

    for a wondrous beauty newly appearing in you.

  17. خفيت به ذاتى وأظهر صبوتي

    فتبين المعدوم بالموجود

    Through it my self was hidden, and it revealed my yearning;

    so the nonexistent became manifest through the existent.

  18. شهدت لى الاشجان فيك بأنني

    فان فقد ثبت الفنا بشهود

    My sorrows for you testified on my behalf that I

    am annihilated; thus annihilation is indeed proved by witnesses.

  19. غلب الغرام على رسومى فاعجبوا

    لغرامي الموجود فى مفقود

    Ardent love has overcome the traces of my being—so marvel

    at my ardent love, which exists in one who is lost.
