    My longing for you, like my ardor for you,

    Forever grows, whether you are present or absent.

    The heart is as ardent as can be for union with you,

    And the body utterly wasted, while tears stream down.

    By your honor, my tears have not quenched—no, nor has

    The east wind's coolness—the fire blazing in my heart.

    No indeed; nor has the dweller grown still—

    The heart's restless yearning for you.

    I am he whom neither what the

    Loved ones do to him nor what the reproachers say can distract.

    عنهم وتبعدنى المهامه عنهم

    O those whom remembrance and reason draw me near to,

    Yet from whom vast deserts keep me far;

    And those in whom my quest reached its end and ceased:

    Now I seek nothing but them.

    My whole being turns toward you, yet I am restrained

    By reverence for you from saying, 'Toward you.'

    والقلب ينجد والجوارح تتهم

    For longing gladdens me, while my fate holds me captive;

    The heart ascends to Najd, while the limbs descend to Tihamah.

    I circle the abodes of your beauty, answering

    Love's call, renouncing all but you in consecration.

    كلفى يقبله وفقرى يلزم

    At the door of your generosity I stand forever;

    My ardent love kisses it, and my poverty clings to it.

    And my heart is soothed by a flash of lightning

    From your camp, or a softly breathing breeze.

    Far be it from your beauty's grace that you should make the

    Hopes and pains my portion from you.

    ومعالم فيها الحطيم وزمزم

    May rain bless Nu'man al-Arak, as far as Mina,

    And the landmarks containing the Hatim and Zamzam;

    وربى عليها آل علوة خيموا

    And the abodes of companionship at al-'Aqiq, which I love,

    And hills where 'Alwah's kin pitched their tents;

    And with the riders' clamor on its gravelly plain,

    In delight, when they draw near to it and offer greetings.

    There I attained success in both worlds, when

    I fulfilled my service to you, and I was, and you were.

    O my master, what can I say, and what

    Can I compose in prose and verse about your eminence?

    وتقوم اركان العلى لا زلتم

    Praise gains grandeur through you, not you through it;

    And the pillars of glory stand firm—may you ever remain.

    I have not uttered your noble name, out of jealous care

    For it, lest any mouth should speak it.

    Indeed, even when I go to the utmost, I fall short

    In praising you; so accepting my inability is safer.

    And if, in praise, one imagines a rank

    As the highest, you are above all one can imagine.

    O my support for tomorrow and today, and those

    Through whom I confront time and hold sway,

    عن أن يقربه الجناب الأكرم

    Have compassion on one whom his fate has hindered

    From being brought near by the most generous presence;

    And it was decreed that he must leave your shade,

    Forced by necessities that bestow and govern.

    With a heart thirsty for sweet water at al-Liwa,

    With passion's sword keen, enthralled and enamored.

    Show kindness to my weakness with a glance of mercy

    And guidance, for you are stars of guidance.

    وادعوا ورقوا واستجيروا وارحموا

    Take pity, be generous, be gentle, and show compassion;

    Pray, be tender, seek protection, and have mercy.

    يسمو بها قدرى الضئيل ويرسم

    Indeed, I humbly beg for an initiatory cloak,

    Through which my lowly rank may rise and be established;

    And counsel from you, whose goodness may shape my deeds,

    And which guides me to what I do not know.

    For whenever you direct a share of your care toward

    My poverty, the gain will not elude me.

    May God never deprive existence of your being,

    Ever; and may He let you enjoy what you have attained.

    May He grant me, through you, the joys

    That my hope in you has always promised me.
