When the drinking companions delight in wine,

and the daughter of the vine stirs the noble,

and he rises to pass it round, tawny and unmixed,

killing care or bringing passion to life,

it shows you the drinking companion’s mouth, when he sips it,

    as though a veil of gold lay over it;

and a man with a soft, nasal voice bears it round; lovesick through the night

is his suitor, who wakes distraught with love.

You see aloofness in his nearness to you,

and a smile in his turning away from you.

Then do not be like the one who, if I come to complain

to him of love’s anguish, heaps reproach upon me.

He goes along with waywardness as it wills,

yet reproaches mankind for dabbling in it.
