We have a gathering where sorrow finds no entrance,

nor does joy ever find an exit from it.

It embraces every kind of beauty,

so no seeker of the good life would turn away from it.

Song, more delightful to young men than wealth,

through which life grows serene and cares are dispelled.

Even the forbearing man's composure falters with yearning for it,

and the scrupulous ascetic longs for it.

And a garden, as though rain had visited it at dawn, leaving it

wafting musk-scented breezes and breathing fragrance.

You see the flecks of flowers within it as though they were

stars on a horizon, shining and set alight.

And wonders there remind you of loved ones—

blossoms, among them narcissus and violet.

This is like one gazing at you with his eyes—

sweetly nasal-voiced and innocent, with alluring, deep-dark eyes.

And this is like one greeting you with the line of his cheek-down—

one of the slender-waisted, with long, curling cheek-down.

Wondrously beguiling in his beautiful coyness, he always has

temple-locks curled like scorpions' tails and bent like polo mallets.

And beloved bitter oranges, whose redness shows you

    maidens' cheeks, flushed by reproach.

And a fire that wine rivals with its light:

the fire dies out, but the wine blazes up.

Cups such as souls desire, as though they

were mixed with the fulfillment of wishes and desires.

To an onlooker, the bottles and trays seem like

stars coursing through a sky, and constellations.

Qualities as beautiful as the prince's virtues,

yet he is more splendid and more delightful than they.

As though all of us before him, though he is but one,

were on the shore of a sea that daunts the deep-water voyager.

Radiant, wondrous in noble deeds—through one like him

the eyes of noble deeds find comfort and cool delight.

    هُوَ الْبَدْرُ لكِنْ عِندَهُ الْبَدْرُ يَسْمُجُ

    He is the sea, yet beside him the sea is miserly;

he is the full moon, yet beside him the full moon looks ugly.
