لاحَappeared الْهِلالُthe crescent moon فَماso not يَكادُnearly يُرىis seen
سُقْماًfrom sickness كَصَبٍّlike a lovesick lover شَفهُwasted him away الْخَبْلُmadness
The crescent appeared, yet can scarcely be seen,
The crescent moon appears, barely to be seen
sickly, like a lover whom madness has wasted away.
Like a drinking cup with cracked and broken rim
كَالْفِتْرِlike a thumb-to-forefinger span أَوْor كَالْحَجْلِlike an anklet قَدْalready فَتَحَتْshe opened
مِنْهُof it الْكَعابُthe nubile maiden لِتَدْخُلَso that it may enter الرِّجْلُthe foot
Like a thumb-and-forefinger span, or an anklet opened
As though a sandal strap whose thong gave way
by a maiden to let her foot enter.
Exposing trod on heel rubbed raw and grim
وَالزُّهْرَةُand Venus الزَّهْراءُradiant تَقْدُمُهُprecedes it
فِيin الْجَوِّthe sky وَهْوَwhile it وَراءَهاbehind her يَتْلُوfollows
And radiant Venus goes before it
The bright flower leads while he follows behind
in the sky, while it follows behind her,
Across the sky its pollen he pursues
كَالْقَوْسِlike a bow فُوِّقَwas nocked سَهْمُهاits arrow فَبَداso appeared
مُتَأَلِّقاًgleaming فِيat رَأْسِهِits tip النَّصْلُthe arrowhead
like a bow whose arrow was nocked, and there appeared
As when an arrow arcs back from its bow
at its tip the gleaming arrowhead.
Gleaming point thrusts forth amid the blues
