عَسىperhaps باخِلٌone who is stingy بِلِقاءٍwith a meeting يَجُودُwill be generous
عَسىperhaps ماwhat مَضىhas passed مِنْof تَدانٍcloseness يَعُودُwill return
Perhaps one who begrudges a meeting will be generous.
Perhaps the closeness that has passed will return.
عَسىperhaps مَوْقِفٌa stopping-place أَنْشُدُI seek الْقَلْبَthe heart فِيهِin it
فَيُوجَدَand may be found ذاكَthat الْفُؤادُthe heart الْفَقِيدُthe lost one
Perhaps, at a place where I seek my heart,
that lost heart will then be found.
عَناءًin vain سَهِرْتُI kept vigil إِلىfor هاجِدٍone asleep
وَأَيْنَand where مِنَfrom السّاهِرِينَthe sleepless الْهُجُودُthe sleepers
In vain I kept vigil for one asleep;
and how far sleepers are from the sleepless!
إِذاwhen طالَgrows long عَهْدُكَyour time apart بِالنّازِحِينَfrom those far away
تَغَيَّرَchanges وُدٌّaffection وَحالَتْand alter عُهُوُدpledges
When your separation from those far away grows long,
affection changes, and pledges alter.
أَأَحْمِلُmust I bear? ياO هَجْرُestrangement جَوْرَthe cruelty of الْبِعادِdistance
وَجَوْرَكَand your cruelty إِنِّيI indeed إِذاthen لَلْجَلِيدُsurely steadfast
Must I bear, O estrangement, the cruelty of distance,
and your cruelty too? Then I am steadfast indeed!
أَياO كَمَدِيmy anguish أَللِيلِيdoes my night have? انْقِضاءٌan end
أَياO كَبِدِيmy liver أَلِنارِيdoes my fire have? خُمُودُa dying down
O my anguish, will my night ever end?
O my liver, will my fire ever die down?
مَرِضْتُI fell ill فَهَْso is there? مِنْany شِفاءٍa cure يُصابُto be found
وَهَيهاتَbut how far off! وَالدّاءُwhile the sickness طَرْفٌan eye وَجِيدُand a neck
I have fallen ill—is there any cure to be found?
But how far off, when the sickness is an eye and a neck!
وَياand O حَبَّذاhow welcome مَرَضِيmy sickness لَوْif only يَكُوwere (continued)
نُ(completes 'were') مُمْرِضِيَthe one who made me ill الْيَوْمَtoday فِيمَنْamong those who يَعُودُvisit the sick
And how welcome my sickness would be, if
the one who made me ill were among today's visitors!
أَياO غُرْمَcompensation for ماwhat أَتْلَفَتْdestroyed مُقْلَتاهُhis two eyes
وَقَدْand perhaps يَحْمِلُbears الثَّأْرَthe blood-debt مَنْone who لاdoes not يُقِيدُgrant requital
O for compensation for what his two eyes destroyed!
And one who grants no requital may yet bear the blood-debt.
وَمَنّىand he promised الْوِصالَunion فَأَهْدىthen bestowed الصُّدُوُدَrejection
وَماand not وَعْدُthe promise ذِيof one given to الْخُلْفِbreaking promises إِلاّexcept وَعِيدُa threat
And he promised union, then bestowed rejection;
and a promise-breaker's promise is nothing but a threat.
خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends إِنْif خانَbetrays خِلٌّa friend أَلاis there no?
حَلِيفٌan ally عَلَىin هَجْرِهِforsaking him أَوْor عَقِيدُa sworn companion
My two friends, if a friend betrays, is there no
ally in forsaking him, or sworn companion?
وَهَلْand will ...? إِنْif وَفىhe keeps faith لِيwith me بِعَهْدِwith the pledge of الْوِصالِunion
أَيَنْقُصُwill ... lessen? هذاthis الْجَوىburning anguish أَمْor يَزِيدُincrease
And if he keeps his pledge of union with me,
will this burning anguish lessen, or grow?
وَياand O قَلْبُheart إِنْif أَخْلَقَhas worn out الْوَجْدُlonging مِنْكَof you
فَأَنىthen whence? لِيَfor me الْيَوْمَtoday قَلْبٌa heart جَدِيدُnew
And O heart, if longing has worn you out,
then where can I find a new heart today?
إِلىuntil مَwhen? تَحُومُyou circle حِيامَthe circling of الْعِطاشِthe thirsty
إِذاwhenever مَورِدٌa watering place عَنَّappears عَزَّis difficult الْوُرُودُreaching the water
How long will you circle like the thirsty,
when any watering place that appears is hard to reach?
