O east-wind breeze, enamored of my longing,

how welcome you would be, if you passed through Najd!

Speak my name—may you prosper—and describe my passion

in the protected grounds; let this be a favor I owe you.

Your fragrance has indeed made me wonder; so, by God,

when was it last at Hind's ruined dwellings?

If her scent has ridden you here to us,

you have indeed visited us with the happiest fortune.

Give me a waft that carries her fragrance,

with whatever you wish of arar blossoms and laurel.

Many a draught was I given from her mouth,

and despite my thirst, it spared me every visit to water.

And a creditor from among my cares exacted from me

a night march on pale camels, between longing and swift strides.

Whenever they moaned with longing, we almost

perished with longing atop their saddles.

    أَنا أَوْلاكُما بِغَيِّي وَرُشْدِي

    My two dear friends, leave me alone with my sorrow;

I have more claim than you both to my error and right guidance.

If I were safe from reproach and tears, I would not have chosen

to stand alone at the dwellings.

Often I would take my high spirits into

pleasures, my sash cast aside, trailing my cloak,

among dark-eyed gazelles and fair ones,

    and supple, smooth-skinned beauties,

in a season burnished by youth,

and a life of comfortable leisure,

and safety from calamities, as though I were

Ibn Abd al-Razzaq's most devoted servant,

finding one unmatched in resolve, peerless.

he never slackens, weaving warp and weft.

His hospitality journeys to every night traveler,

and his bounty comes as a delegation to every delegation.

A day of his bounty equals a year of rain,

when few give generously and bring help.

    رِ وَجُودٌ عَلَى النَّوائِبِ مُعْدِي

    Generosity interceding for poverty's forelock,

    and bounty that aids against calamities;

and a hand that has enriched the needy, until

you see no seeker of aid among mankind.

He gave before I asked: neither my face's luster

stood in for his bounty, nor my praise's luster.

He first offered me affection freely, though I was not

worthy of affection in this age.

pouring down without lightning or thunder,

violate my covenant or alter my bond.

unleashing the reins of gratitude from every

tongue, until it repeats and begins anew:

from full moons upon soft cushions,

and lions upon swift, sleek steeds,

and mature, venerable men who meet

on glory's summits, or beardless noble youths,

where Abu al-Husayn is found rich

in the two precious treasures: eminence and glory.

Of praiseworthy standing in every excellence

he practices, and possessed of the soundest speech,

rooted in glory's very heart through the noblest

father and grandfather, of resplendent lineage.

Can your hand's generosity be matched by my canter

and gallop in the racecourse of praise,

so that I repay you with praise? Far from it!

Yet I shall do my utmost.

and your noble deeds have kindled my firestick,

then the favor has been entrusted to a faithful guardian,

who will not spoil kindness through ingratitude,

with rhymes like stars journeying by night,

vying across every rise and hollow,

outstripping the camels and their riders, ever

sung to weary camels, which then stride swiftly,

enduring, never devoid—however long time passes

over them—of some fresh cause for pride.

If offered to fair women, they would prefer them

to the precious jewels of every necklace.

wealth is untouched by any mischance of loss.
