May good be yours! My time has assailed me,

and I have no strength against what time brings.

As though time does not count its reversals

as reversals if their harm passes me by.

Had anyone but time led me unjustly,

I would have bolted—but my reins are in its hands.

In selling verse, I have been plagued by every miser

with broken promises and false hopes.

And who will ensure it is bought from me? I merely

set up a market of humiliation for my dignity.

Whenever I seek to meet people with it, still

my sense of shame and poverty's sting battle each other.

I dread asking misers, as though I were

unwillingly facing battle with a coward's heart.

I have sat in the path of calamities, exposed

to their workings; whatever they wished upon me befell me,

keeping company with days that drag their skirts

over me with many kinds of misfortune.

I see sustenance; my resolve hastens

toward it, while my luck holds back from it.

And does it help me that my resolve is unfettered,

when my luck is captive whenever I seek my goals?

And ill luck has always, for every seeker,

guaranteed that the goal close at hand remains far away.

And the steadfast, eager man may be denied his goal,

while the feeble laggard is granted his wishes.

And among the bitterest misfortunes, to me, is that I

    am unaided against misfortune's bitterness.

    أُقارِعُها شَأْنَ الْخُطُوبِ وَشَانِي

    So here I am, left alone with every great calamity;

I battle it—an affair between calamities and me.

So may an age stumble, in which you see no one saying

"Rise again!" to a youth whose feet have slipped.

Will you, then, bestow a favor and hasten

to me, now that death has laid its neck to the ground,

and time has laid upon me the burdens of its baseness,

burdens that weary both humankind and jinn,

and rescue me from poverty's grasp, after

its abasement has made me its slave and held me fast,

and make my praise, for as long as I live, everlasting

in your honor, and as long as Aban's hills stand firm?

Then you will win the gratitude of a man who will not tear down

through ingratitude for favors what your generosity builds.

For one like you, Uns al-Dawla, has rescued a perishing man,

a captive of calamities, a prisoner of time,

and left one who fears time as though

he were facing it in safety through his kindness.
