لَقَدْindeed غالَhas dealt death نَبْلُكَyour arrows ياO نابِلُarcher
وَقَصَّرَand has fallen short عَنْof فِعْلِكَyour deed الْقائِلُthe speaker
Indeed, your arrows have dealt death, O archer,
Your nobility is sublime, O noble one,
And the speaker falls short of your deeds.
And he who speaks of it falls short.
أَسَهْمُكَis your arrow حِينَwhen يُصِيبُit strikes الْقَضاdivine decree (continued)
ءُword-final letter; no separate meaning أَمْor يَدُكَyour hand الْقَدَرُfate النّازِلُdescending
Is your arrow, when it strikes, divine decree,
Is it your arrows when destiny strikes,
Or is your hand the fate that descends?
Or is it your hand, O fatal destiny?
يَدٌa hand لِلنَّدىfor bounty وَالرَّدىand death صَوْبُهاits aim
فَعَزْمُكَso your resolve مُحْيٍlife-giving بِهاthrough it قاتِلُkilling
A hand whose aim is bounty and death;
A hand whose sway leads to pleasure and torment alike,
Thus your resolve, through it, gives life and kills.
Your resolve made strong by it is deadly.
فَلَيْسَso does not يَطِيشُgo astray لَهاfor it مُْسَلٌa loosed arrow (probable reading)
كَماjust as لاnot يَخِيبُis disappointed لَهاfor it آمِلُone who hopes
So no arrow it looses goes astray,
So no warrior wavers before it,
Just as no one who hopes in it is disappointed.
Just as no hopeful soul is disappointed by it.
