The one most entitled to share your grief in
your calamities is the one with whom you share joy.
وَلاand do not تَعْلَقُcling بِصَبْرٍto patience بَعْدَafter بَدْرٍBadr
ذَمَمْناwe condemned الصَّبْرَpatience عَنْهُover his loss والصَّبُوراand the patient man
Do not cling to patience after Badr;
we have condemned patience over him, and the patient man.
وَإِنْand if قالُواthey say اسْتَرَدَّreclaimed الدَّهْرُTime مِنْهُfrom him
مُعاراًsomething lent كَيْفَhow تَمْنَعُهُcan you withhold it from اْلمُعِيراthe lender
And if they say, 'Time reclaimed from him
what it lent—how can you withhold it from the lender?'
فَلِمْthen why أَعطاكَهُdid it give him to you نَجْماًas a star خَفِياًfaint
وَعادَand returned لأَخْذِهِto take him قَمَراًas a moon مُنِيراshining
then why did it give him to you as a faint star,
and return to take him as a shining moon?
أَباO Abu الذَوّادِal-Dhawwad ماnot كَبِدٌa liver أُذِيبَتْmelted

O Abu al-Dhawwad, a liver melted by grief
brings no healing, nor does a heart sent flying.
فَهلَْthen is there لَكَfor you أَنْto تُراقِبَawait فِيهِin this يَوْماًa day
يُوَفّىare paid in full الصَابِرونَthe patient بِهِon it الأُجُوراthe rewards
Will you then look, in this, toward a day
when the patient are paid their rewards in full?
وَلَوْلاand were it not أَنْthat أَخافَI fear اللهَGod مِنْlest أَنْthat

Were it not that I fear God, lest
He see me unbelieving after faith,
لَماI would not عَزَّيْتُhave consoled قَلْبَكَyour heart عَنْfor the loss of حَبِيبٍa beloved
وَكُنْتُand I would be بِأَنْin how to أُحَرِّقَهُburn it بَصِيراwell versed
I would not have consoled your heart for a beloved,
and would have known well how to set it aflame.
وَلَمْand not نَعْهَدْكَhave we known you فِيin سَرّاءِprosperity حالٍof a state
وَلاnor ضَرّائِهاits adversity إِلاّexcept شَكُوراthankful
We have never known you amid prosperity
or adversity except as deeply thankful.
فَصَبْراًso have patience لِلْمُلِمِّbefore the calamity وإِنْeven though أَصَبْناwe have found
جَناحَthe wing الصَّبْرِof patience مُنْهاضاًfractured كَسِيراbroken
So be patient before the calamity, though we have found
the wing of patience fractured and broken.
أَلَمْdid you not تَعْلَمْknow وَكانَand was أَبُوكَyour father مِمَّنْamong those who

Did you not know—and your father was among those
who, when courting eminence, paid the dearest dowries—
بِأَنَّكُمُthat you all أَطَبُّmost expert بِكُلِّin every أَمْرٍmatter
إِذاwhen ماindeed ضَيَّعَneglected النّاسُpeople الأُمُوراaffairs
that you are most expert in every matter,
when people let affairs fall into neglect?
وَأَيُّand what الْخَطْبِcalamity يَنْقُصُdiminishes مِنْfrom عُلاكُمْyour eminence

What calamity can diminish your eminence,
and what draining can empty the seas?
وَأَيُّand what عَواصِفِviolent gusts الأَرْواحِof winds يَوْماًever

What violent gusts of wind could ever
blow and unsettle the steadfast mountain?
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you شائِدٌare building وَأَخُوكَand your brother مَجْداًglory
سَيَخْلُدُwill endure ذِكْرُهُits memory حَسَناًfair أَثِيراcherished
Indeed, you and your brother are building a glory
whose memory will endure, fair and cherished.
إِذاif وُقِّيتُماyou two are protected مِنْfrom كُلِّevery خَطْبٍcalamity
فَماthen not نَبْغِيdo we seek عَلَىagainst زَمَنٍTime ظَهِيراa supporter
If you two are protected from every calamity,
then we seek no helper against Time.
وَماand not الْقَمَرانِthe two luminaries إِذْwhen سَعِداthey were auspicious وَتَمّاand complete

Nor are the two luminaries, when auspicious and complete,
more dazzling in the light of excellence than you two.
أُرانِيI see myself لاnot أَسُومُasking الصَّبْرَpatience قَلْبِيof my heart
فَأُدْرِكُهُand so attain it يَسِيراeasily أَوْor عَسِيراwith difficulty
I see I cannot ask patience of my heart
and attain it, whether easily or with difficulty,
كَأَنِّيas though I مُبْتَغٍwere seeking لَكُماfor you two شَبِيهاًa likeness
بِهِthrough it أَوْor مُدَّعِclaiming لَكُماfor you two نَظِيراan equal
as though I were seeking someone like you two
through it, or claiming an equal to you two.
فَلاso may not أَخْلىleave empty الزَّمانُTime لَكُمْfor you مَحَلاّa place

May Time never leave a place of yours empty,
and may your sky never lack full moons.
