I implore you: do not deprive the hands of wine,

nor ever deny the morning its morning draught.

For the rain has begun to clothe with beauty

faces of the earth that once were ugly.

It restores to the bough its foliage,

and sways it with the breeze in delight.

It wept in pity for the lands' drought,

and yearned for them, then flowed forth.

And poured down, as a lovesick man is overwhelmed

by passion, sheds tears, and confesses his love.

As though the clouds were armies seeking

through justice, prosperity in every land.

When the cloud fights the drought there,

with showers of fine rain, it excels in battle.

So it meets it, bearing from its drizzle

and from its downpour weapons for the encounter.

It hits it squarely with arrows of drizzle,

and levels spears of downpour against it.

And draws against it swords of lightning,

so its blows inflict deep wounds upon it.

You see the tongues of blossoms praising it,

so you marvel at them, mute yet eloquent.

As though the gardens were maidens displaying

    to you their lovely garments.

And the rain has left, from its overflow,

a pool—the torrent that has settled in the lowlands.

When the wafting winds shake hands with it,

it ripples like a steed intent on bolting.

And you see a cock whose body is brass,

and whose feathers and wing are silver.

When the water sends it word with a murmur,

    it sings and crows beautifully.

It has two traits among noble qualities:

through them it shows you dignity and playfulness.

When, in delight, it longs to fly,

it cannot move away, out of modesty.

    فَرَجَّعَ أَلْحانَهُ ثُمَّ ناحا

    Whenever it sings, it makes the doves jealous;

so they echo its melodies, then lament.

A morning in which the day has dawned clear,

and the clouds at that hour have grown pure.

As though its rain were vying with the emir,

to resemble his beneficence and generosity.

Yet how can it match one who never stints

in inviolate glory and freely given wealth—

more far-reaching in bounty than the sea in flood,

and sweeter in fragrance than musk diffusing its scent?

So take them and drink cups for which you find

    pure joy as their admixture.

Whenever we unveil the bride of wine,

the bubbles wind a sash about her.

And union has been opened wide to lovers,

and has found spacious bosoms among them.

If Time is generous in our age,

then how can we be miserly toward it?
