Turn the mounts aside at Raqmatayn,

and greet the ban trees of Ramatayn.

And ask the campsite about Rabab,

and those in Lebanon about Lubayn.

Ah, my loneliness for the companions who settled

    between Najd and Abtahayn!

They carried them across the breadth of every wilderness—

stout camels, thinned by the touch of weariness.

And in the companions' domed tents is a tender maiden,

    turning two eyes to bewitch.

The blades of her glance resemble keen swords,

and the Rudayni spear lays claim to her supple form.

And no solitary doe in a valley's hollow,

frightened, the mother of two fawns,

drinking its cool water and taking shelter

    with two bright, dappled fawns,

can match the dark-lipped beauty when she appears,

in the lift of her neck, the glance of her eye.

    When you two reach al-Hujayla,

    and Mirtam, beyond Surratayn,

and reach the encampment well into the night,

then summon her to two ban trees,

and convey to her greetings of peace from me,

gently, and say to her softly:

You have left in al-Ghawr a man crazed with love,

holding his heart in both palms,

a sworn ally of longing, an intimate of sleeplessness,

wrestling with death because of these two.
