وليس يحيق المكر إلا بأهله
Your enemy is slain by the evil of his own deed.
Your enemy is killed by his own evil deed
And scheming recoils only upon its perpetrators.
And cunning only entraps its host

بجهل جدير ان يموت بجهله
Whoever pursues oppression that misdirects his striving,
He who rides the misguided horse of tyranny
In ignorance, deserves to die through his ignorance.
Deserves to die in his own ignorance

وقد اضمروا حقداً فجوزوا بمثله
So ruin upon your enemies who banded together,
So shame on your enemies who gathered
Having concealed hatred, only to be repaid in kind.
Harboring rancor and met it in kind

They came against you, but were driven back from death in disappointment,
They came to you and were driven back in failure
Trotting across the rough and level ground of the open country.
Hiding their sorrow in the bare plains

The keen blade of a mighty, obeyed leader is no true cutter
The mighty protector is not angry
If it does not defend his flocks and his dwelling.
If he does not defend his pasture and domain

They saw you and thought the earth trembled beneath them,
They saw you and thought the land cramped by them
Heaving, while each strayed from the right course of his paths.
Seething, every stray losing his path

So they fled seeking refuge from havoc
As ewes flee from a lion and his cub.
Like frightened sheep from wolf and cub

Had your spears rained blood on them
Blood like the tears of a lovesick, distraught lover.
Like the tear of a weeping camel

Whatever your swords ripped open in their skins,
They would not have pierced their hides
The supple spearshaft stitches shut with its loose stitching.
Too hard for the Indian steel blades

They were ungrateful for your gifts that clothed them
In brocade whose appearance rivaled spring,
With fine garments rivaling spring in its glory

Of generosity, in time's maturity and childhood.
Of generosity in old age and childhood

من الأصل والإنسان يزكو بأصله
Their breaking those covenants was baseness
And their breaking of pacts was baseness
Rooted in their origins; a person flourishes through his origins.
In origin, while man is ennobled by his roots

يسد طريق الشمس عنهم بظله
So you repaid them with a grim day, its dust
So you punished them on a grim overcast day
Blocking the sun's path to them with its shadow.
That blocked the sun's path with its shade

You would take the dust's appearance for dark clouds
Imagine the example of heavy rain clouds
Within it, and the keen sword for lightning when drawn.
With lightning flashing in their swell

Their captive fears sleep, and their free man
Their freed prisoners fear destiny
Flees in dread from his brother and his friend.
While their captives flee their own brothers and comrades

And when you enforced punishment and justice, striking ruthlessly
And when you carried out justice and law decisively
At them, the sword reached their necks before reproach.
The sword preceded argument before any plea

So you gladdened him who destroyed the tyrants with his keen blade,
So you destroyed the dens of tyrants in their fury
And pleased him who trod the carpet with his sandal.
And pleased those who treaded the carpet with their shoes

You shouldered the burdens of affairs; even some of what
And you took on the burdens of leadership
You bore would crush the firmly rooted mountains beneath its weight.
Though some tasks make even mountains buckle

You spent what you possessed seeking glory
As gifts; and eminence is attained by bestowing it.
Achievement, earning glory through expenditure

And through beneficence you raised, in every town,
And you did good in every town
A widespread cloud, its downpour preceding its drizzle.
With abundant, widespread rain before the plea

We marvel at this age, which bestowed upon mankind
We are amazed that time gave the world
Someone like you, despite time's stinginess and miserliness.
The likes of you, despite its stinginess and miserliness

فيخشى لسطواه ويرجي لفضله
For you are the one feared and looked to with hope through all time,
For you are feared and hoped for in battle
Feared for his might, and looked to for his bounty.
Feared for your power, hoped for, for your grace

And you are the one to whose command time submitted;
You who time obeyed your command
Thus time's ultimate desire is his own ultimate desire.
So that its ultimate desire is your desire

So live on; may you never cease, through time, to strike your foes,
You whose blood did not cease subduing enemies
For the lion's assaults bring safety to his offspring.
So that in the lion's domination, there is safety for its cub

And in the toil of days there is rest for man
As when you gather honey along with the stings of its bees.
As with your wound, a bee's honey for its sting

O peerless highest, O most glorious of all
And O you who rise above 'perhaps' and 'perhaps he will':
O you who transcended "perhaps" and "maybe"

I confide to you [reading uncertain]: I have no steed with which to collect
My son, I have no means to fulfill
My debts, and the debtor has exhausted me with his delays.
My debts, and my poverty exceeds my hopes

So provide me what I wish for, if you wish, promptly
And if you wish to hasten the gift, then with its horsecloth.
Or if you intend to hasten the gift, then soon

For I am a man who, were I to seek bounty other than yours,
For if you deny me your gifts
People would say, 'You have strayed far, you fool!
The world would say you abandoned your dependent

Will you leave the waters of the seas drifting
And settle for the least of the soil's scant seepage?'
And be content for those on land with the least?
