أيا غادياً والدهر يغذي بلحمه
أسيرcaptive الأمانيhopes والمنيةwhile death أسرعswifter
أسير الأماني والمنية أسرع
O you who go forth, while Time feeds on your flesh,
captive to hopes, while death is swifter.
أمطتyou have removed قناعveil النفسthe soul عنfrom شهواتهاits desires
أمطت قناع النفس عن شهواتها
ذرleave الحمقاthe fools فالحمقاءfor the foolish one بالدرwith pearls تقنعis content
ذر الحمقا فالحمقاء بالدر تقنع
You have lifted the soul’s veil from its desires.
Leave the fools; the foolish one is content with pearls.
وكلand each one ينالattains الكلeverything فيin نفعbenefiting نفسهhimself
وكل ينال الكل في نفع نفسه
منfrom العيشlife والمستبعضand one who deems little الأمرthe matter أنفعmore beneficial
من العيش والمستبعض الأمر أنفع
And each attains everything in seeking his own benefit
from life; yet one who makes little of the matter is more beneficial.
