منالattaining لياليnights of الأنسintimacy منfrom ظبيةa gazelle of الأنسhumankind
The dearest wish of heart, eye, and soul
My soul's wishes, my heart's and eyes' delight
Is to gain nights of intimacy with a human gazelle.
Are the nights of intimacy with a lovely gazelle
ظفرتI attained علىaccording to حكمthe decree of المنىdesire بمنائهاwinning her (unclear form)
وحاولتand I sought منهاfrom her صحتيmy recovery وبهاand through her نكسيmy relapse
I won her, as desire decreed,
I gained what I wished for from her
And sought my cure from her, though she brought my relapse.
And tried through her to regain my health, but it brought me down

Smooth of cheek—when I touched it, I felt
Her soft cheek, when I touched it
Fear for it, lest it melt beneath the touch.
Fearing it would melt from the touch

With a glance I planted upon it the rose of modesty,
I married her, the rose of modesty, with a glance
And kissed it to reap the fruit of my planting.
And kissed her so I could attain my heart's desire
وانand indeed لذيذthe sweetness of الحسنbeauty يؤكلis eaten بالمنىthrough wishes
ولميكand it was not مثلlike الاكلfood يمضغchewed بالضرسwith the molars
For beauty's sweetness is eaten through wishes,
The sweetness of beauty is consumed through wishing
Not like food chewed with the molars.
And nothing is like eating, chewed by molars

Only parting has lodged a choking lump within it—
What is destined is only the agony of separation
Not in my throat, but in my senses.
Not in my throat but in my perceptions

Who can grant me a time that never betrays? I have not spent the night
And who do I have that won't betray
Hoping through her for my livelihood, and urging onward for it, away from me [text unclear],
I hoped through her for my livelihood and looked to her

Seriously, and he spends all his effort
To wear me down; my today in it is poorer than my yesterday.
On separating us, so my days with him are worse than my yesterdays

With the black of my eye, to say nothing of my soul.
With the black of my eyes, let alone my soul

For praise of him is far too exalted for my ink,
For he is too noble for my praises describing him
And beyond my pen, my hand, the written line, and parchment.
And for my pen, palm, line or paper
