May we be your ransom: the paths of bounty are my earnest pursuit amid jest.
Your pursuit of glory has weaned me of jest,
So do not settle for a portion for me instead of seeking the whole.
So do not be content with some when I seek all.

The glory of striving brings me back to reason.

To sever me with a piece of darkness without plains.

With promise after treachery and abandonment after union.

Poems: if I harbor an intention to aim them at anyone but you,
Poems, if I harbored for other than you their intention,
they become barren, and my inward thought yields no offspring.
Would be barren and my conscience would not conceive issue.

When recited, the doves cannot give voice to their melody
When I recite them, the paper does not understand their tune
in lament amid a green, dew-soaked arak tree.
Wailing with the rustling foliage of Arak wood.

Take them, my lord, as the finest robe,
Without you, my patron, the proudest of garb
and clothe the shoulders of your glory in them, or adorn it.
And the mantle I honor the hems of your glory with.

وماand as long as راقpleases معتلthe languid النسيمbreeze لمعتلan invalid
And endure as long as love poetry moves a listener,
It sings to every refined listener,
and as long as a languid breeze delights an invalid.
Yet no impaired tune appeals to the impaired.

May you ever be resolute in purpose, prudence, and might,
I persist decided, determined, and resilient,
radiant in countenance, character, and form.
Radiant of face, character, and figure.
وكنand be ليfor me مقيلاone who rescues منfrom عثارa stumble اصابنيthat struck me
وانand if لمnot تكنyou are ليfor me عندat نائبةa calamity منwho ليis for me
Be one who lifts me from a stumble that has struck me;
And be for me a shelter from the disgrace that struck me,
if you are not there for me in calamity, who will be?
Even if you have no precedent of sheltering me.

Do not try me with distance from you; so often
Do not estrange me with distance from you, for I have long
I have departed without taking either my heart or my mind.
Journeyed though my heart nor mind accompanied me.

I am not one who loathes affection because of separation,
I am no constant friend to amusements,
nor one who forgets, though some separations bring forgetfulness.
Nor one amused though some amusements may beguile.

I am the son of your favors; if I deny them,
I am the son of your hands which, if I show ingratitude,
I deny the parents' rights over their child.
I show ingratitude to parents’ rights over the son.

If I spend the night doubting the gratitude due for their bounty,
And if I doubt thanking their bounty,
I doubt God's decree, the scriptures, and the messengers.
I doubt God’s decree, scriptures, and messengers.

My soul has not busied itself with anyone but you or with others;
My soul did not busy itself with other than you though equals,
rather, your affection leaves it no time for anything else.
It was busy without your affection, occupied.

I tell you: none in this age has eminence like yours,
I tell you none in time is like you, one of lofty lineage,
rising to Sirius's summit; nor is any poet like me.
A lineage at the pinnacle of distinction, and no poet like me.
