رب أمرٍ تركته طوع أمري

رب أمرٍ تركته طوع أمري

ومخوفٍ ألقيت نفسي فيه

ومخوفٍ ألقيت نفسي فيه

Many a matter at my command I left aside,

My Lord, I left an affair to my own will

And many a feared thing I cast myself into.

And into a fearful one I cast myself

فعل مثلي فعل الجهول بحاليه

فعل مثلي فعل الجهول بحاليه

الغوى الجاني الظلوم السفيه

الغوى الجاني الظلوم السفيه

The conduct of one like me is that of one ignorant of his two states—

One like me did as the ignorant with himself

The wayward wrongdoer, the deeply unjust fool—

Deluded, unjust, ignorant transgressor

أن أرى مادحاً لما أنا قائلٍ

أن أرى مادحاً لما أنا قائلٍ

أو أري هاجياً لمن أصطفيه

أو أري هاجياً لمن أصطفيه

That I should be seen praising what I say,

That I see one praising what I am saying

Or seen satirizing the one I choose.

Or that I see a critic of whom I chose
