Do you marvel, my friend, at the visit of the one who shuns me,

And think my fate has softened toward me after its biting cruelty?

He visited me only so I might accept his falsehood,

And, amid all that befell me, spit out the bitterness of his words.

Yet the days may sway the affection of one hard to win,

Much given to cruelty, peerless in beauty, harsh in manner.

For how often, by shunning me, he has weakened my strength,

And, in his promise, paid no heed to the weight of his counsel.

And some oryx are frailer in their pledges than crystal,

When a rock strikes it with crushing force.

So I spent the night with him in an impossible state,

Though the heart gained from it its fullest share of bliss.

Like one who casts his burden off—oh, for slumber!

When his eyes awaken, it returns to weigh him down.

From his mouth he beguiles me, in the garden of his beauty,

Upon the roses of his cheeks and the narcissus of his gaze.

He bade me farewell for fear of the watcher; I said, 'In

God's sheltering safety and protection may you journey.'
