To God we turn in the calamity that has brought us grief,

And praise be to God for the decree that came to pass.

By Abu al-Walid; the kingdom grew mighty and unassailable.

    وابنٌ نجيبٌ تولى الأمر واضطلعا

    A noble father—Paradise became his dwelling;

And a worthy son assumed command and rose to the task.

To God belongs a midmorning sun that has set within the grave,

And so left behind a moon that has risen with good fortune.

Its perpetrator calls on you to exact retribution or let it pass.

Even were he given the world in all its vastness,

And did not gain your hoped-for pardon, he would not be content.

And what would you do but show kindness

To a wrongdoer who hoped to regain your favor and turned back?

You have seen Ibn Sa'd: when he held in his power

Bishr, he pardoned him; so repel wrong as he repelled it.

My praise of you shall surely, before long, erase

Completely, all talk of my reproach, wherever it has been heard.
