If you knew what fire burns within the heart,

You would not have kindled fire with Indian aloeswood and laurel.

O dwelling of ʿUlwa, you have stirred sorrow in me,

And increased my burning pangs—hail to you, dwelling!

How often I spent the night in you, devoted to pleasures,

While night was clad in a robe of tar,

As though it were a monk wrapped in haircloth,

The zealous one bound his waist with a girdle.

In it, a dark-eyed one passes round cups of wine,

Casting from his gaze the glances of a sorcerer.
