    In vain! Squadrons and spears avail nothing,

    nor do Mashrafi swords, when facing death.

    Why, then, are noble steeds driven? If death races

    and they race with all their might, they tire, while it does not.

    And why don smooth coats of mail? They

    cannot keep you from being pierced by death's dusky spears.

    فَنَوَافِذُ الأَفْهَامِ قد وَقَفَتْ هُنَا

    Indeed, death's essence cannot be grasped;

    so even penetrating minds have halted here.

    In everything there is a warning for humankind

    of what Shuʿayb once warned Midian against.

    لَكِنْ كَرِهْنَا أَنْ نُحِلَّ المَوْطِنَا

    Our life is a journey, and death our homeland;

    but we have hated settling in that homeland.

    كم مِنْ ضِنَاكٍ في مَطَالِبِهِ ضَنَى

    Life grows harder when a goal proves unattainable;

    how many a stout man has wasted away in his pursuits!

    لا تَيْأَسَنَّ فَرُبَّ صَعْبٍ أَمْكَنَا

    And time has often yielded its reins;

    never despair: many a difficulty has become manageable.

    مَنْ شَكَّ أَنَّ اليومَ يُزْجِي المَوْهِنَا

    Death must follow life;

    who doubts that day brings on the night?

    كُلُّ النُّفُوْسِ تَحِلُّ أَفْنيةَ الفَنَا

    Do not expect continued existence to spare anyone;

    every soul lodges in annihilation's courtyards.

    You find life precious, yet our souls

    are strangers longing for a home within it.

    If they became aware and gathered themselves, they would know

    that death is life itself, beyond all doubt.

    ما كُلُّ مَنْ لَحَظَ الأمورَ تَبَيَّنَا

    But they have gone blind and have not seen their right course;

    not everyone who observes affairs understands them.

    تُبْصِرْ دَنَاءَةَ ذي الحياةِ وذي الدُّنَى

    So contemplate the loss of the lady of humankind;

    you will see the baseness of this life and these worlds.

    What a mighty calamity, before which they quailed!

    Their brave man had never before imagined he would quail.

    مَنْ ذا يُطَالِبُ بالتِّرَاتِ الأزْمُنَا

    They were bereaved, though they had never known an unavenged wrong;

    who can demand blood-vengeance from the ages?

    Their swords melted in grief: their edges

    resemble tear ducts, and their scabbards eyelids.

    And their spears splintered—if they were not

    trees from which swift death was harvested.

    They never recalled her kindness without forgetting

    the grace of consolation; after her, it will never be graceful.

    So it is as though their breaths and their speech

    were fire burning among them the incense wood of praise.

    الحُزْنُ ما وَالَى الدَّمُوْعَ الهُتَّنَا

    No tear duct has dried of tears for her;

    grief is what keeps the streaming tears flowing.

    O noble lady of kings and of the king through whom

    glory donned the robes of radiance!

    So may you be watered with rain like your bounty or our tears,

    by clouds that turn your earth into a grief-stricken meadow.

    If you have died, here is your son, the king who

    revives humankind, largesse, and hopes.

    وَأَدامَ إحْياءَ المَكَارِمِ فاكتَنَى

    His praiseworthy deeds multiplied, justifying his name;

    and he kept noble deeds alive, thus earning his byname.

    والدَّهْرُ لا يَسْطِيعُ يَهْدِمُ ما بَنَى

    So when the enemies build, he demolishes what they build;

    yet time cannot demolish what he has built.

    O king, whose qualities

    exhaust the eloquent and will not obey tongues,

    if the enormity of loss has dawned unbelieving

    in fortitude, let evening find you only a believer.

    فَإِلَيْهِمَا حَكَمَ الحِجَى أنْ تَركُنَا

    Be patient, however great the loss, and take solace;

    for reason decrees that you should lean on both.

    Time is too petty to bring a calamity

    that noble fortitude cannot turn into something lighter.

    والحِجْرُ يقضِي أن تكونَ مُهَوِّنَا

    Filial devotion bids you magnify the loss;

    while reason bids you make it light.

    ولَئِنْ حَزِنْتَ فَحُكْمُهُ أنْ تَحْزَنَا

    So if you are patient, your excellence is radiant;

    and if you grieve, your excellence decrees that you should grieve.
