صُنْتُI guarded اسمَname إلْفِيmy beloved فَدَأْباًso, habitually لاnot أُسَمِّيْهِI name him
ولاand not أزالُI cease بإلغازِيthrough my riddles أُعَمِّيْهِI obscure it
I have guarded my beloved's name, so I never name him.
I guarded my beloved's name, and made it my habit not to name him,
And I keep obscuring it with my riddles.
Yet I still allude to him indirectly with my riddles,
وصاحبِيand my companion عَدَدِيٌّnumerical قدindeed رَمَزْتٌI alluded بهto him
بِذِكْرِby mentioning أعدادِnumerical values ماwhat تَحْوِيcontain مَبَانِيْهِhis constituent letters
My companion is represented by numbers; I have alluded to him
And my companion's number, I hinted at with
By mentioning the numerical values his letters contain.
The mention of numbers contained in its digits,
فَجّذْرُso the square root أَوَّلِهِhis first رُبْعٌa quarter لآخِرِهِof his last
وجَذْرُand the square root آخِرِهِhis last رُبْعٌa quarter لِثَانِيْهِof his second
So the square root of his first is a quarter of his last.
So the root of the first is a quarter of its last,
And the square root of his last is a quarter of his second.
And the root of its last is a quarter of its second,
وإنَّand indeed ثَانِيّةُsecond خُمْسٌa fifth لِثَالِثِهِof his third
فافهَمْso understand فقدfor indeed لاَحَhas become clear للأفهامto discerning minds خَافِيْهِhis secret
And indeed, his second is a fifth of his third.
And its second is a fifth of its third,
So understand, for his secret has become clear to discerning minds.
So understand, for its hidden meaning has become clear.
