فَيَاso, oh عَجَباًwhat a wonder أنْthat ظَلَّremained قَلْبِيَmy heart مُؤْمِناًa believer
فَيَا عَجَباً أنْ ظَلَّ قَلْبِيَ مُؤْمِناً
بِشَرْعِin the law of غَرَامٍpassionate love ظَلَّremained بالوَصْلِin union كافِراًan unbeliever
بِشَرْعِ غَرَامٍ ظَلَّ بالوَصْلِ كافِراً
So how strange that my heart has remained a believer
in the law of a love that has remained an unbeliever in union.

يَرَى رَأْيَ ذي الإِلحادِ أَنْ ليس ناشِرَا
I hope for my solace's resurrection, while her beauty
holds the atheist's view: my solace will not rise again.
فأنتِso you ضميرٌa pronoun ليسis not يُعْرَفُknown كُنْهُهُits true nature
فأنتِ ضميرٌ ليس يُعْرَفُ كُنْهُهُ

فَلِمْ صَيَّرُوا في المَعْرِفَاتِ الضَّمائرَا
So you are a pronoun whose true nature is unknown;
so why did they class pronouns among definite nouns?

And I have kept inquiring into the essence of beauty,
yet found no meaning bewitching except your beauty.

And knowledge of the days yields experience;
and whoever understands the half-verses unravels the circles.

And were the pursuit of Time not the goal of knowing them,
they would not have unfolded from them Basit and Wafir.

And were it not for Abu Yahya, Muhammad ibn Ma'n,
the days would not have been treasures to me.

So do not find a marvel from me strange, for his glory
consists of marvels that have inspired these marvels in me.
