وبينand among المَسِيْحِيَّاتِthe Christian women لِيfor me سَامِرِيَّةٌa Samaritan woman
بَعِيْدٌunlikely علىfor الصَّبِّthe lovesick lover الحَنِيْفيِّthe Muslim أنthat تَدْنُوshe draws near
And among the Christian women, I have a Samaritan beloved.
That she should draw near is a distant prospect for the lovesick Muslim.
مُثَلِّثَةٌa Trinitarian woman قدindeed وحَّدَmade unique اللهُGod حُسْنَهاher beauty
فَثُنِّيَso was doubled فيin قَلْبِيmy heart بهاbecause of her الوَجْدُlonging والحُزْنُand sorrow
She is a Trinitarian; God has made her beauty unique,
So longing and sorrow were doubled in my heart because of her.
وطَيَّand within the folds of الخِمارِthe veil الجَوْنِthe black حُسْنٌbeauty كأنَّماas though
تَجَمَّعَgathered فيهwithin it البَدْرُthe full moon والليلُand the night والدَّجْنُand the gloom
And within the black veil's folds is beauty, as though
The full moon, night, and gloom had gathered within it.
وفيand at مَقْعِدِthe resting place of الزُّنَّارِthe girdle عَقْدُthe knot of صَبَابَتِيmy ardent longing
فَمِنْfor from تَحْتِهِbeneath it دِعْصٌa sand mound ومِنْand from فوقهabove it غُصْنُa bough
And where her girdle rests lies the knot of my longing;
For beneath it is a sand mound, and above it a bough.
وفيand in ذلكthat الوادِيthe valley رَشاًa gazelle fawn أَضْلُعيmy ribs لهfor it

كِناسٌa covert وقُمْرِيٌّand a turtledove فوادِيmy heart لهfor it وَكْنُa nest
And in that valley is a gazelle fawn—my ribs are its
Covert—and a turtledove, whose nest is my heart.
