    Seize, you two, the chances for pleasure offered

    by the vicissitudes of the nights—for they are as rare as a vulture’s eggs.

    فلَومي على إذهابِها لعُقوقي

    And do not reproach me, you two, for ardent love and youth;

    for blaming me for squandering them is surely to wrong me.

    And life lies only in debauchery and passion,

    and drinking clear wine and union with a lover.

    And do not trust, you two, the peace of time, for it is

    a friend to whoever befriends it, yet no friend.

    It has indeed been unjust in its judgments, until it made me gag,

    and amid calamities made me choke on my own saliva.
