    حمراءَ فالتفاحُ أحمر

    Rise, boy, and bring it,

    Red—for the apple is red;

    Crimson as your cheek, amid sweet

    basil, like your neatly traced sideburn.

    So it is as though, while dilution clothes

    its head in a circlet of jewels,

    it were the full moon of darkness, for which the

    celestial spheres fashioned the sky’s stars into a mail helmet.

    And as though the hand of the one passing it around

    were safflower-dyed by my crimson hue.
