    كلا ولا أغلى نهاه ليَرخصا

    O Time, the base man did not gain only to lose;

    No, nor did he make his intellect dear only for it to grow cheap.

    فالآن جُلُّ منايَ أن أتخلَّصا

    I once hoped through virtues to attain high rank;

    Now my chief desire is to escape.

    Had I known that my merit would diminish me,

    I would not, out of folly, have been so eager for it.

    Like musk, crushed on a grinding stone to release its scent,

    And aloeswood burned for its fragrance, purified by fire.

    And the gazelle, but for its beauty, would not be hunted,

    While fate keeps the owl safe from being hunted.

    They compared you, in ignorance, with kings; unjust is he

    Who compares the loftiest stars with pebbles.

    And they deemed what you attained too much for you, while I

    Count those who obey and those who rebel too few for you.

    The world is too small for you; so, for its treasures,

    Keep watch, and lie in wait for its dominion.
