فقدfor indeed عزمَresolved الظلامُthe darkness علىon الزِيالِdeparture
I spoke aloud and said to the cupbearer, “Pass it round!”
I called loudly to the cupbearer, "Pass it round!"
For darkness had resolved to depart.
For darkness was determined to spend the night.
وقدand already ثملتgrew drunk غصونُbranches البانِthe bān tree سُكراwith intoxication
وغنّىand sang الطيرُthe birds حالاًa time بعدَafter حالِa time
And the bān-tree boughs had fallen into drunkenness,
The boughs of the acacia were drunk with wine,
And the birds sang time after time.
And birds sang, replacing song after song.

And he called to prayer, and answering him were
The call to prayer sounded, responding to it
The Christians’ bells in the monastic cells.
Were church bells in the hills, chiming all around.

And the hour grew pleasant, so escort her as a bride,
The time was right, so play for me my bride
Seeking youth despite the nights’ old age.
Who longs for youth as nights go by.

He who poured it for me was tender and slender-waisted,
Serve it, a child with soft, bright cheeks,
Gentle in beauty, beloved for his coyness,
Graceful, beloved, pampered and spoiled.

Nasal-voiced and slender-flanked, he binds
I sing, with tender limbs that bend
The minds of all people in a fetter,
Minds like boughs swaying gently in the wind.

With laments of passion, separation, and longing,
With plaintive love, desire, longing and pain,
And amorous teasing, swaying, and straightening.
Rapture, inclination, balance and restrain.

I drank with the sun and the gazelle,
I drank coffee black as gazelle’s eyes
Openly, wine like a gazelle’s blood.
With the gazelle and the gazelle’s fawn.
