تجاهلت لمّا لم أرَ العقلَ نافعا

تجاهلت لمّا لم أرَ العقلَ نافعا

وأنكرتُ لما كنتُ بالعلم ضائعا

وأنكرتُ لما كنتُ بالعلم ضائعا

I feigned ignorance when I found reason of no use,

I ignored when I saw no use in reason

And I disavowed learning when, for all my knowledge, I was neglected.

And denied when knowledge left me astray

وما نافعي عقلي وعلمي وفطنتي

وما نافعي عقلي وعلمي وفطنتي

إذا بتُ صِفرَ الكفِّ والكيسِ جائعا

إذا بتُ صِفرَ الكفِّ والكيسِ جائعا

And my reason, my learning, and my discernment are of no use to me

Of no use to me is my reason, knowledge, and wit

When I spend the night hungry, with empty hand and purse.

If I remain empty-handed and hungry all day
