ومن نكَد الدنيا الدنيّة أنّها

ومن نكَد الدنيا الدنيّة أنّها

تَخُصُّ بإدراك المُنى كلَّ ناقص

تَخُصُّ بإدراك المُنى كلَّ ناقص

And among the miseries of this base world is that it

singles out every deficient man for the fulfillment of his wishes.

وكم ذنَب قد صار رأساً وجبهةٍ

وكم ذنَب قد صار رأساً وجبهةٍ

تَوَدُّ اضطرارا أنّها في الأخامِصِ

تَوَدُّ اضطرارا أنّها في الأخامِصِ

And how many a tail has become a head, while many a brow

is forced to wish it were among the arches of feet.

وما سادَ في هذا الزمان ابنُ حُرةٍّ

وما سادَ في هذا الزمان ابنُ حُرةٍّ

وإن ساد فاعلم أنّه غيرُ خالصِ

وإن ساد فاعلم أنّه غيرُ خالصِ

And no son of a free woman has risen to power in this age;

and if he has, know that he is not of pure descent.

لحى اللهُ عَزماً حطَّ رحلي لديهم

لحى اللهُ عَزماً حطَّ رحلي لديهم

وجعجع عن أرض العراقِ قلائصي

وجعجع عن أرض العراقِ قلائصي

May God curse the resolve that set down my saddle among them

and kept my young she-camels from the land of Iraq.
