And a noble youth, sweet-natured and congenial,

with lovely front teeth, neither insipid nor boorish,

keen-minded, well versed in time and its treachery,

as though he had a kind of madness for knowledge.

He outpaces the nights’ misfortunes and their tyranny,

and snatches pleasures by plunder and stealth.

He says, “Let me seize the chances to fulfill my wishes,

for, by God, I shall taste no wine in my grave.”

I warmed to him when I saw his qualities

suited me—and sociability is human nature.

Does my time know that I am unafraid

of my death, and that my life holds me prisoner?

Through my eagerness, I seek rest and safety

from harm among people—but the outcome is the reverse.

    And I do not complain of my time’s vicissitudes or its people;

rather, I complain to Time about myself.
