يقول أبو سعيد إذ رآني

عفيفاً منذ عام ما شربتُ

عفيفاً منذ عام ما شربتُ

Abu Saʿid says, on seeing me

Abu Sa'id said when he saw me

abstinent—I have not drunk for a year—

Abstinent for a year, not having drunk

على يدِ أيّ شيخ تبتَ قل لي

على يدِ أيّ شيخ تبتَ قل لي

فقلتُ على يدِ الإفلاس تبتُ

فقلتُ على يدِ الإفلاس تبتُ

“Tell me, at the hand of which shaykh did you repent?”

At the hand of which sheikh have you repented? Tell me

So I said, “At the hand of bankruptcy I repented.”

I said, at the hand of poverty have I repented
