فتىً يهتزّ للإحسان ظَرفاً

فتىً يهتزّ للإحسان ظَرفاً

ومن فِعل الدنايا يشمِئزُّ

ومن فِعل الدنايا يشمِئزُّ

A youth who thrills to doing good, out of refinement,

A youth who sways with kindness and refinement

and recoils from committing base deeds.

And is disgusted by the deeds of this world

أغرُّ محسَّدُ العلياء نَدبٌ

أغرُّ محسَّدُ العلياء نَدبٌ

مَحلُّ علائهِ في الجدِّ نَشزُ

مَحلُّ علائهِ في الجدِّ نَشزُ

Radiant, much envied for his lofty rank, a gallant man,

The bereavement of the virtuous is grievous

his exalted station in earnest endeavor stands on high ground.

Their abode in adversity is woeful

له رأيٌ كنَصلِ السيف ماضٍ

له رأيٌ كنَصلِ السيف ماضٍ

غدا في مَفصِل الجُلَّى يَحُزُّ

غدا في مَفصِل الجُلَّى يَحُزُّ

He has judgment keen as a sword’s blade,

He has an opinion sharp as the blade of a sword

which now cuts into the joint of the gravest ordeal.

Tomorrow it will cut through the joints of the armored

مُذِلٌّ للثراءِ بجودِ كفٍّ

مُذِلٌّ للثراءِ بجودِ كفٍّ

نداها للعُلا أبداً مُعِزُّ

نداها للعُلا أبداً مُعِزُّ

He humbles wealth through the generosity of a hand

Humiliating wealth with the generosity of his palm

whose bounty forever brings honor to glory.

Its aid to the eminent he forever disdains

لو أنّ لي في كل عضو فماً

لو أنّ لي في كل عضو فماً

فيه لسانٌ ناطِقٌ موجزُ

فيه لسانٌ ناطِقٌ موجزُ

If I had a mouth in every limb,

If I had a mouth within each limb

with a speaking, succinct tongue within it.

Each with an eloquent and succinct tongue
