تبتَ على عَهدِ الصِّبا غَيرَ نَاكِثِ

تبتَ على عَهدِ الصِّبا غَيرَ نَاكِثِ

وبادرتَ مهواة الهوى غيرَ رَائِثِ

وبادرتَ مهواة الهوى غيرَ رَائِثِ

You repented without breaking your covenant with youth;

You broke the pact of youth not withdrawing,

And hastened into passion's abyss without delay.

And pursued the passions of love not ceasing.

ثَقِيلٌ عليكَ الجدُ من نهي ناصح

ثَقِيلٌ عليكَ الجدُ من نهي ناصح

خَفيفٌ لديكَ الهَزلُ من سعي عابثِ

خَفيفٌ لديكَ الهَزلُ من سعي عابثِ

The earnestness of a well-wisher's admonition weighs heavily on you;

Sternness from advice of well-wishers weighs heavy on you,

The frivolity of a trifler's pursuits sits lightly with you.

Frivolity from futile pursuit seems light to you.

ثَنيتَ إلى الدنيا العنانَ جهالةً

ثَنيتَ إلى الدنيا العنانَ جهالةً

لتَمسِكَ منها بالحبالِ الرثائثِ

لتَمسِكَ منها بالحبالِ الرثائثِ

In ignorance you turned the reins toward this world,

You turned the reins to worldly life out of ignorance,

To cling to her tattered ropes.

To grasp from it the flimsy ropes.

ثلاثاً فَطَلِّقها ولا تَنوِ رجعةً

ثلاثاً فَطَلِّقها ولا تَنوِ رجعةً

لها فَهيَ في التَّحقِيقِ أمُّ الخَبَائِثِ

لها فَهيَ في التَّحقِيقِ أمُّ الخَبَائِثِ

Divorce her three times, and do not intend a return

Divorce it thrice and do not intend returning,

To her, for she is truly the mother of evils.

For it is in truth the mother of evils.

ثُكِلتَ فما وَفَّيتَ حقاً لسائِلٍ

ثُكِلتَ فما وَفَّيتَ حقاً لسائِلٍ

ولكن جَمَعتَ المالَ حَطماً لوارِثِ

ولكن جَمَعتَ المالَ حَطماً لوارِثِ

May you be bereaved—for you have not given a beggar his due;

You failed so you did not fulfill any right of a questioner,

And yet you amassed wealth for an heir to squander.

But you gathered wealth only to be smashed by heirs.
