ما بغيضٌ إلى الكرام خصوصاً

ما بغيضٌ إلى الكرام خصوصاً

وحبيبٌ إلى الأنامِ عموما

وحبيبٌ إلى الأنامِ عموما

What is hateful to the generous in particular,

How hateful to the noble ones in particular

and beloved by humankind in general?

Yet beloved of people in general

فاعجبوا منه كيف يحمي ويُحمَى

فاعجبوا منه كيف يحمي ويُحمَى

ويكفُّ العدا ويغني العديما

ويكفُّ العدا ويغني العديما

So marvel at how it protects and is protected,

So wonder at him, how he protects and is protected

and wards off enemies and enriches the destitute.

And restrains enemies and enriches the destitute

ويكونُ الثاني كبيرَ أناسٍ

ويكونُ الثاني كبيرَ أناسٍ

حطمتهُ حياته تحطيما

حطمتهُ حياته تحطيما

And the second is an elder among people,

And becomes great among the second group of people

whom his life has utterly shattered.

Whose lives were shattered into pieces

فإذا ما قلبتَ أولَ شطرٍ

فإذا ما قلبتَ أولَ شطرٍ

ردّ منطوقَ لغزه مفهوما

ردّ منطوقَ لغزه مفهوما

Then, when you reverse the first half,

So if you invert the first hemistich

it makes the wording of its riddle intelligible.

The riddle's text becomes clear in meaning

قَلبُهُ بعد حذفك الفاء منه

قَلبُهُ بعد حذفك الفاء منه

هو شيءٌ يُحلّل التحريما

هو شيءٌ يُحلّل التحريما

Its reversal, after you remove the letter fāʾ from it,

Its heart, after you remove the fa from it

is something that makes the forbidden lawful,

Is something that legalizes prohibitions

أو صغيرٌ مستحسنٌ لم يؤدَّب

أو صغيرٌ مستحسنٌ لم يؤدَّب

إن تعلِّمه يقبل التعليما

إن تعلِّمه يقبل التعليما

or a pleasing young one, not yet trained:

Or a small boy, well-mannered if taught

if you teach it, it accepts instruction.

He accepts to be educated

فلتبيِّن ما قلتُهُ ولتعيِّن

فلتبيِّن ما قلتُهُ ولتعيِّن

وبهِ فلتقم مقاماً كريما

وبهِ فلتقم مقاماً كريما

So explain what I have said, and identify it,

So explain what I have said, and specify

and thereby occupy an honorable station.

And with it take an honorable stand
